O’Dwyers Offers Best Pizza Around Raleigh
When O’Dwyers Pub opened in Wake Forest, I was there on day one to get a seat near the beer taps. The Guinness action was everything I hoped it would be. They pour a real Black and Tan there too, with Guinness layered on top of Harp’s. For domestic tastes, they keep a goodly supply of bottled beers on ice (not just in a cooler, but on ice).
But the real find was the pizza.
It turns out that proprietor Mike Fletcher (Fletch) once owned a pizzeria in New York. After he relocated, he made the mistake of managing a Raleigh pub that didn’t have a pizza oven. He and Dave Olyowski have built their own place now, and done everything up right from the Internet jukebox, to the seventeen TV screens, to the bar, and to the kitchen where they make that pizza with the perfect crust. There is the delicate outer crunchy part and the melt-in-your-mouth part. You could very well eat the crust by itself, but the toppings are top notch too.
They have a whole menu full of things that look to be a cut above the average bar fare – such as fresh cut fries instead of the usual fresh frozen ones.
I just may never get around to anything but the pizza. Seriously, if this place were a chain it could sweep the country like Krispy Kreme Donuts did a few years ago.
O’Dwyers Irish Sports Pub is a few blocks out of Raleigh into Wake Forest at
