Opposites Attract in Romantic Relationships

Often we hear the statement that we have nothing in common. The truth of the matter is its differences that really make a relationship work. Obviously some similarities are needed as a good base for a relationship. Its important to meet eye to eye on values and morals. The simple truth is on certain issues its opposites that attract in relationships. Often when someone is asked to describe their partner they say he/she complements my qualities. Now the word complements means not that they are the same, but they work well together. In economics complementary goods are goods that one is needed to work another. DVD’S and DVD Players are examples of complementary goods. In this article I hope to illustrate how differences work in a relationship. Think of this theory as magnets as its the opposite forces that attract towards each other not the same forces.

The first thing I would say is that don’t limit the pool. People assume that certain people can’t be right for them before they have spent the time to get to know them. I think this is especially relevant in interracial relationships. Its important to remember that what matters is what is someone heart. Two people maybe from different races and have a different cultural, but as long as their values are similar the relationship can work. The temptation to only date within your own race is a tempting one, but remember a relationship between cultures and races will always be exciting. Many marriages run stale because couples run out of things to talk about. If your partner is different then they is always something new to learn and this may keep a relationship together. Again remember that someone who seems different might be just what you need opposites can pull two people together in a magical way.

As human beings we all have different qualities and its these differences that truly make us connect with another human being. The qualities that we don’t possess are the qualities that we look for in an partner. If two people have all the same qualities it will be hard for the relationship to work because two different perspectives are often needed. If two very stubborn people got together in a relationship there would always be problems because neither party would let down in arguments. A relaxed person needs to be with someone who is frantic this ensures things will get done. On the other hand the frantic person equally needs the relaxed person to calm down. These are the kind of combinations of qualities that allow two people to truly be there for each other. Remember next time your dating look for qualities that complement your own rather than ones that you already have. Often the couples that work best are often the ones which each person truly admires the other and this is really the major theory behind when opposites attract in romantic relationships.
