Organized Yard Sales: Preparation is Key to Success
In my case, I sold all my designer baby clothes on eBay, because I knew I would get more money for them on there. All the items with minor stains and holes, these hold onto, because believe it or not, there are people who will buy those clothes at yard sales, so I make sure not to discard them unless they are in terrible condition. It will either be a mother who knows how to get tough stains out, a mother who is short on cash, and will take an item regardless of the condition. Then you have your crafters at the yard sales looking for cheap, used fabrics to use for their crafts. See, you may have not of thought of this yard sale secret, did you – and that’s just for clothes.
Next, you will either need to market your own yard sale, or my favorite thing to do, find a school yard sale or church yard sale where you pay a small fee to set up. Make sure to sell a few large items to cover your cost of the fee so you can profit off of your yard sale items, too. If you have to Market your own yard sale, put out flyers and ads online the week before. You will need a long table of your own most of the time, also, so be sure to invest in one of these for your self. They also will come in handy for parties at the house.
Organize all your yard sale items by separating it into sizes and either hang them on a rack, or have them folded neatly in a nice arrangement at your yard sale. Do not throw everything into a box, some people are shy to look in the box – I used to be on of them. Have everything laying out on a blanket or table so that you can see each item and it’s price. Another word of advice, don’t not put price tags on your items! Even if you happen to be an expensive pricing person, still include a tag so the buyers have something to go buy if the decide to try to bargain with you. If you absolutely must do boxes, organize them by the sizes, gender or prices, whichever you prefer or have time to do. Any knick knacks or larger items should be cleaned with a big price tag on them so your buyers can see it clearly. Make sure to have enough dollars and quarters on you to make change for your customers. Be sure to have plenty of bags or boxes, also. Create either a lemonade stand, or a cooler of drinks purchased from a bulk supply store such as BJ’s or Sam’s Club to make a little extra profit off of.
Your yard sale will be a success if you have the right prices, so be sure not to price anything to high. You’d rather sell a lot of your junk then be stuck back with it and have wasted your day at your yard sale only to have made a small amount of money. Use you yard sale money to buy new items for your house, or save it for a rainy day!
