Our Beautiful $18,000 Kitchen Remodel
From May 15 through July 25, 2012, my kitchen underwent a complete facelift. Actually, it was beyond a facelift; rather a complete remodel. This project encompassed the removal of all cabinets and appliances while replacing them with their more attractive and energy-efficient stainless-steel counterparts.
The kitchen’s countertops were replaced with awe-inspiring granite with a glass backsplash ($1,300) for easy cleaning and elegant appearance. These countertops added a special, rare element in that they served an additional dining purpose. The added 6 inches of width onto the countertop created the possibility of a bar-like feel, right in the kitchen. Adding bar stools will allow for a venue change within the kitchen.
The wallpaper also had to be removed as a part of the complete makeover of our formerly archaic kitchen. The new wallpaper allowed uplifting bright colors to hug our walls, giving the room a spacious, beautifying appearance.
We extracted our ancient, run-down cabinets and replaced them with ones of the contemporary, cherry-wood variety ($9,000). In order to accommodate the height of my family, we eliminated a soffit, which added the necessary room to avoid any danger.
Our cooking appliances were no exception to our complete remodel ($7,700). The stove was moved over 6 inches to the left, allowing for an easier preparation of meals. Our other crucial cooking tool, the microwave is better situated due to added counter space in the cooking area. We added a new high-powered exhaust system with insulation that helps with a much more affordable energy bill.
Through the hiring of a contractor about two months elapsed between the commencement and the completion of this project.
The contracting business has seen many layoffs since the housing crisis in 2008, which has lead to many contractors seeking work and even for a rock-bottom price. We found our contractor through a referral, which also lead to a better price.
Do not expect a speedy resolution to your kitchen. There is always a substantial amount of work to be done in a remodel, which could take months. Our contractor claimed it would take him one week to complete the project. On many other occasions, he said that he would finish much quicker than he actually did. In closing, my final personal recommendation is, unless you have construction experience, please hire a contractor when attempting a project of this magnitude.
