Pet Accessories Store Goes the Extra Mile for Customers
At Bow Wow’s Best, Jo Ann Grayson and her partners Douglas Zwit and CFO Patti Hasner specialize in unique dog items that are hard to find.
The company was formed among four friends in South Florida while out with their respective dogs for a walk. The partners run their site out of Delray Beach, Florida and search high and low for pet items.
“How we started in the business was we went looking for all kinds of things for our dogs and we couldn’t find them in one place,” said Grayson. “We decided we wanted to make a website that was just special for what we would buy in one place. We were looking for more specialty kinds of products, not your every day dog food or dog treats but special collars, beds, things that were more out of the ordinary. We thought that would be special.”
Grayson said the on-line store is doing really well because customers come to them when they want those items such as rare and unique collars that are unique and different. Bow Wow’s Best also specializes in food such as dog treats not available in pet stores. They also get a lot of orders from vets and they carry little t-shirts and upscale products.
“We have many many hits on the site but would like to be able to retail to more people, reaching out to them,” said Grayson. “We have done advertising on Dog Fancy Magazine’s site which has been good and advertised in Fido Friendly Magazine. We are doing real fine right now as far as orders,” said Grayson. “The biggest thing is more exposure so we have more orders. People who know about us come back to us. We have plans to find ways to reach out to people that would really benefit them. And then maybe open up a store down the road but not yet.”
Grayson advises new business owners to make themselves unique in some way and try to find something that makes the enterprise stand out.
Hasner reaches out personally to customers so it becomes more personal between the client and the customers so that if there is something the customer wants, she goes and finds it. Bow Wow’s gets a lot of international orders and people seem to be locating them all over the world.
Some of the store’s best sellers include a Zippy Zebra Wheeler Pet Carrier, bite-size dog-safe brownies, a Celebrity Bed made of velvet and feather trim, and a Donut Bed with a tufted cushion that can be used as a crate or travel mat. Other items include personalized ceramic pet dinnerware, bone feeders accented with hand-painted paw prints, jewelry, dog houses, items for dog birthday parties, clothing, and pet strollers.
