We often keep pets. Different people keep different pets. Some keep dogs, some cats, some keep parrots or other birds. We take care of our pets. Give them food and love them. We hug them many times. Our past time is spent in taking their care. We often play with them. Some people think it is quite cumbersome to keep a pet. They regard vaccinating, going to veterinary doctors are quite problematic. They also regard the pet as a pest when they want to go out for a trip in their holidays. But in reality scientific studies claim the pets are better than taking medicines.
Guide dogs are used to guide the blind people. The Americans often use them. It is of great help. Now dogs, cats, horses are used to provide psychiatric assistance to humans suffering from agoraphobia, addiction, depression, and schizophrenia. In the US, the pets are regarded in high esteem. To them a pet is an “emotional support animal.” They have the same legal rights in housing and transportation.
According to Ingrid Collins, a consultant psychiatrist at London Medical Centre, a pet is better than a Prozac, an antidepressant. A pet wants comfort feeding and love. In return they give huge affection. The canines are used in America for the treatment of Post-traumatic stress disorder. The depressed people are inward looking. When they care for an uncomplicated soul like a cat, they are extremely therapeutic.
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) originated in United States. It is now practiced in Britain. In Stepps Rehabilitation Center at Gloucestershire, the horses pick up someone’s mental state and react to it clearly. The therapists ask their clients to feed and groom the horses. It helps to face the people fears and have self-confidence.
