Pick Up Lines Don’t Work

I’ll admit that I have been dating for over ten years and while I can’t assume that I have heard it all when it comes to pick up lines, I can safely say that I have heard enough pick up lines to be a good judge of them, ands sorry fellows, but they just don’t work. From the horrible “Are you tired? Because you been running through my mind ALL DAY!” to the eye-rolling “Where do I know you from?” men need to accept that if you want to meet a smart woman, cheesy worn-out pick up lines are NOT the way to go, we’ll just laugh you off (if we even answer) and repeat your idiotic pick up lines to our friends so they can make fun of you as well.

So what does work if you want to meet a woman? It doesn’t matter if you’re waiting for the bus or having a drink at a bar, the best approach is always being your original self. Women already know that you are somehow interested (you wouldn’t have come up to us if you weren’t) and we also know that you found us attractive (again, obvious) so when you’re making your way to us and thinking about what you’ll say, don’t ruin it with prefabricated worn-out pick up lines that even my mother has heard.

First, you should try to make eye contact with the lady. Believe me, if you have a chance, she will look. It may be a coy smile or a shy and quick glance, but she’ll meet your eye somehow. If you keep looking and she avoids you, don’t waste your time and quickly direct your attention somewhere else. If you keep looking at her, she’ll just freak out.

Once you’ve established eye contact, you have a definite sign that you are welcome into her space. You may approach. But don’t ruin it stating the obvious (“Hi, I saw you looking at me from across the room… blah, blah, blah) because she might feel embarrassed and get defensive. Just introduce yourself and ask a random question or make a witty comment about the place you’re at. Example: “Hi, my name is John. Do you come here often? Who are you here with?”(Also good to find out if she has a boyfriend) or “Hi, my name is Patrick. Have you tried the house drink? It’s amazing! Would you like one?” or “Don’t you wish that today was Saturday? Hi, my name is Carl” or whatever, make something up. Just remember that she’s not there for you to whine, so be very careful to only say positive things and steer clear of pick up lines.

Aside from appreciating your courageous behavior of just coming up and not playing around, she will also like the different approach, and if you make a comment about something around you, you will already have a conversation opener and the approach won’t be as uncomfortable.

You may think that I am wrong because pick up lines have worked for you, but you know what? Those women that the pick up lines worked on were ALREADY interested in you and were going to fall for just about anything you would say. But most women look for a man that has a combination of looks and smarts and if you use pick up lines on one of them, it won’t matter if you’re a doctor or have a 4.0 GPA, you’re not going to get very far.
Just be yourself.
