Pick Your Own Pumpkin!

Each October families flock to Sinkland Farms in Christiansburg, Va. Each weekend in October Sinkland Farms hosts their annual Fall festival and pumpkin patch. It is a great activity for the whole family. They offer hay rides off the back of classic John Deere tractors out to their enormous pumpkin patch where you can choose your own pumpkin. If you’re waiting for the hay ride, you can also partake of the wonderful food choices that include sweet and salty kettle corn made in a real kettle, hotdogs, chili, hot chocolate and other assorted drinks and snacks. They also have creamy ice cream just like it should be.

You can take a walk around and see the different fall crafts vendors bring. You can also let the young ones enjoy a pony ride around the ring. They have face painting for the kids and you can visit the animals in the stables down near the farm. They have a beautiful large mare who’s very friendly, a donkey who may eat the buttons off your jacket if you’re not careful and a steer with gigantic set of horns. You’re free to pet all the animals and occasionally they even have feed on site to feed the animals with.

The corn maze is huge and very elaborate. There is an additional charge if you’d like to take your chances going through it. They give you a map to make sure you don’t get too lost and there are little checkpoints along the way to make sure you’re on the right track. It’s quite an accomplishment when you make it all the way through.

The ride out to the pumpkins is quite a lovely view and brings you right to a very large field with pumpkins as far as the eye can see. You have so many choices it could take you all day to just pick one. You may even see some white pumpkins and small gourds if you look carefully. They are all ready to be taken home. You just bring them back with you and pay for them back at the farm. The prices are very fair and affordable. And if you’re not into going out into the fields themselves, you can pick from the piles of pumpkins and gourds already plucked from the fields by the farmers. They always have a great amount to choose from, all shapes and sizes. Sinkland Farms is sure to become a family tradition with your family. Come out and visit sometime.
