Once you have had your fill of crab or other fresh local seafood, you will then continue on, and enter a world that is both exuberating and exhilarating. History and Beaches in Delaware & Maryland

Tourists have long known about the thrill of visiting these eastern states, and many of them come back every year. The majority of visitors will find themselves heading to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Dover, Delaware, Dewey Beach, Delaware, Ocean City, Maryland or one of the many historical cities that both Delaware and Maryland have to offer. The beach is always filled to the hilt with events, and you cannot go wrong if you decide to walk along the crisp clean sands of any one of these spectacular beaches.
Ocean City
Ocean City offers sparkling water and white sandy beaches, not to mention the most spectacular boardwalk that you have ever laid your eyes on. One of the many attractions that bring tourists in by the truck full is the Ocean City Pier rides. Two full-scale amusement parks will keep you busy for quite a few days, and then you can move onto Maryland’s famous blue crabs, which can be caught from a number of Bayside fishing piers, and taken back to your private room for cooking and enjoying in private. Summers at Ocean City are filled with swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, surf fishing, kite flying, and a nightlife like no other place that you have ever been. Musicians set up right on the boardwalks, and everyone comes out to play and dance the night away.
A Crowd Pleaser
A popular event is the Annual Ocean City Offshore Challenge. This event is for the diehard fishermen who wish to show off their talents by catching the biggest and best fish. Cash prizes are given to entrants for catching various types of fish sought after that particular year. This is a wonderful event as it benefits the Children’s House by the Sea, and since you are already in the proximity of water with a view, the mile long board walk should entice you, and if not, then the whale and dolphin watching will. These streamline mammals will tantalize you with their expert swimming and knack for showing off to the crowds that gather to watch them. If you find that you just can’t get enough of the beautiful scenery, then you can take an airplane ride over one of the many hidden coves or exotic beaches.
Dover, Delaware
Dover, Delaware is not to be overlooked when it comes to events, tours, and local museums. A popular and festive event that brings in crowds is Old Dover Days. This event is held annually the first weekend in May, and it showcases the colonial history of downtown Dover, capital of “The First State.” This unique event truly captures the character and spirit of Delaware. Generations of local families and visitors come to Old Dover Days for the annual maypole dancing on The Green, traditional crafts demonstrations, special historic house tours and museum tours, delicious food, and costumed re enactments. A fife and drum corps leads the morning parade, kicking off the festival. Delaware’s governor, United States representatives, and other elected officials dress in colonial garb to mix and mingle with the crowds. The setting for this event is spectacular, as it is centered on Dover’s Capital Complex and colonial historic district, with The Green, Old State House, Legislative Hall, nearby historic State Street, and the Loockerman Street shopping district. Museums and schools throughout the city participate with special tours, and food festivals.
The Delaware State Fair
It is one of the largest events in the state, and it begins the third week in July each year at the state fairgrounds in Harrington, Delaware, just outside of Dover. This 80-year tradition brings nearly a quarter million Delawareans and tourists together to play, celebrate, and eat! During the ten-day event, there is nightly headline entertainment at the Harrington Raceway Grandstand, acres of carnival rides and games, livestock, poultry, and produce competitions, pig kissing contests, displays, children’s shows, cooking contests, a multitude of local food, and eastern hospitality.
Dewey Beach
Considered to be the most scenic coastlines in Delaware, Dewey Beach is a tranquil retreat that is ideal for romantics, families and retirees. Not a weekend goes by that Dewey doesn’t transform into one of the best social scenes on the East Coast, never failing to attract a dedicated following of singles from Delaware, Maryland and the DC area. Dewey offers something for everyone. The sparkling water entices you to come in for a swim, and the beach is lined for miles with sun worshipers of all ages, and there is no shortage when it comes to clubs. Rehoboth Beach
This popular beach resort town welcomes everyone, and it is best known as the “gay beach”. This is evident as the rainbow-colored triangle stickers and flags in the windows are hung proudly by many of the area businesses, and same-sex couples can be seen walking, and holding hands along the boardwalk without the fear of being different. The nightlife at the beach is first rate as the town becomes alive with action just about anywhere you go, and at all hours of the day and night. Rehoboth is also known for its award winning Annual Independent Film Festival.The five day festival showcases about 100 of the best American and foreign independent films including features, documentaries, and shorts. Film enthusiasts can also enjoy workshops and seminars, talking with celebrity guests, as well as festive Opening Night and Closing Night celebrations.
Lewes, Delaware
This town’s proud heritage has been carefully preserved by the Lewes Historical Society, making Lewes a great place to take a leisurely stroll. The historic district in Lewes contains many of the older, preserved homes and Lewes’ downtown district features charming shops and restaurants. The Lewes museum is a must see in order to get a deeper glimpse into Lewes’s past. It’s baroque red brick exterior, which looks like nothing else for miles around, is modeled after the town hall of Hoorn, The Netherlands. Another popular attraction is the Cape Henlopen State Park which sits just east of Lewes with five miles of shoreline where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. The Great Walking Dune, nature trails, a bird sanctuary, the Seaside Nature Center, a fishing pier and an observation tower are just a few of the attractions at this beautiful park.
