When you get a young pot bellied pig, it will be very small and cute. You have to remember though that it will not stay this way. They can grow to be fairly large. If you get one of these pigs, be sure to have it neutered or spayed. If you don’t get a male neutered, it will emit a very bad odor. Also, if you don’t get a female spayed, she will have many mood swings and can be very mean during this time. You may want to get your pig’s canine teeth clipped when you get it. If the pig bites you it will hurt much less with the teeth clipped. Males that aren’t neutered are the most common biters.

Many people don’t realize how smart pigs are. Pigs are actually smarter than dogs! You can train them to do many things, even to use a litter box! Pot bellied pigs love to be with people but usually do not like to be held. If you pick them up, they tend to get very nervous. They are extremely social and love to be pet!

These pigs need to have lots of fresh water and also a large wallowing area. They enjoy rolling around in mud because it keeps them cool. You shouldn’t try to do this inside or you will have a giant mess. Pot bellied pigs are usually fed a variety of fruits and vegetables as well as commercially sold pig feed.

If you decide to get one of these animals, they will need to be kept in an area that is at least 50 feet by 150 feet. They need to have a shelter that is dry, warm, and draft free. Inside the shelter they should also have straw or hay. Make sure the temperature in there does not go below freezing! Be sure you don’t house this pig with donkeys, horses, or llamas.

Pot bellied pigs are mainly so popular because of their temperament and their intelligence. They are very friendly and just love to be around people! Just make sure you know what you are getting into before you buy a pig for a pet.
