Product Review: Jay Robb Whey Protein Powder
Like most people I have tried my share of protein powders over the years and found that they either tasted like wallpaper paste or didn’t mix well and went down in big lumps. I enjoy having my smoothie in the morning so continued to jump from one protein powder to the next, always looking for that one perfect protein powder. And I found it recently when I tried Jay Robb’s Whey Protein Powder.
I had been trolling the aisles of my local health food store looking for yet another protein powder when an employee came by and recommended I try the Jay Robb. It was a bit spendy but thought I’d give it a shot, why not? Have to admit that I did not hold out much hope that this protein powder would be any better than the others I had tried, even though it had cost me quite a bit more. But it ended up being the best decision I ever made!
First of all, this is without question the best tasting protein powder I have found in my 10+ years of drinking protein powders. It definitely earns its reputation of being “the best-tasting protein on the planet”. It comes in vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry; I have also noticed that it is available online in pina colada and tropical dreamsicle flavors as well. Tried the vanilla, chocolate and strawberry flavors, they were all totally yummy. But, since I love to add fruit and often use vegetable juice (that I juice myself), I found that the vanilla flavor worked best for me since it blends taste-wise with everything. It blends up nice and smooth, no lumps at all! I use it in my blender at home but have also mixed it in a shaker cup or with just a spoon while traveling and it blended just as well. A test most protein powders cannot stand up to! It is available in 1 lb, 2, lb, and 6 lb. sizes, with the 1 lb size running about $20.
Secondly, a lot of the protein powders out there use tons of sugar and refined carbohydrates, like fructose, glucose, and maltodextrin to sweeten their products. Others use chemically manufactured artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, splenda and polydextose to make their products taste good. That has caused a lot of problems for me in choosing a protein powder since I personally choose not use any refined sugar or artificial sweeteners. Most of the time that meant I had to settle for the tasteless protein powders. But Jay Robb eliminated this problem for me since their product is sweetened with Stevia, a natural, plant-derived sweetener, and contains no added sugar, just the naturally occurring sugar from milk protein.
Thirdly, I found with Jay Robb is that the whey protein in their product comes from cows not treated with Bovine Growth Hormone or BGH. BGH is a synthetic cow growth hormone, manufactured by a large drug company, injected every 2 weeks into cows in an effort to make them produce more milk than usual. While the damaging health effects for humans from this hormone have not been conclusively proven, it has been proven to have a damaging effect on the cows injected with this drug; additionally current research out there suggests that this hormone has some serious health risks for humans and I personally choose not to take those health risks.
Jay Robb also offers 24 grams of high quality protein per serving, quite high for a protein powder. It is low in lactose, contains no artificial colors in any of its flavors, and is free of gluten and MSG (another drug similar to artificial sweeteners). And for those watching their fats it is fat free. Many fat free products are also taste free. Not so with Jay Robb!
Jay Robb costs a bit more than a lot of other protein powders on the market. But in my humble opinion it is well worth the added cost. If you have been looking for a high quality, outrageously tasty protein powder, either for before workouts or for making smoothies, I highly recommend you try Jay Robb.
