Product Review: Orajel Dry Mouth Moisturizing Toothpaste

Unless you’ve suffered from dry mouth, you don’t know just how uncomfortable it can be. Dry mouth can be due to any number of reasons: diabetes, chemotherapy, Sjogren’s Syndrome; even the hormonal upset of menopause can have an effect on your moisture producing glands.

I have a very dry mouth because of Sjogren’s Syndrome. It seems like I’m constantly looking for things to relieve the dryness. I carry a water bottle at all times, and leave one near my bed each night. I carry mints and lozenges to suck on, and frequently chew gum to stimulate saliva flow as well.

When it comes to dental hygiene, most of the normal toothpastes, mouthwashes, and rinses on the grocery store shelves are too drying for dry mouth sufferers to use.

One day I noticed a new product on the shelf, Orajel Dry Mouth Moisturizing Toothpaste. I bought a tube to try.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from a “moisturizing” toothpaste. I squeezed out a pea-sized blob on my toothbrush. The toothpaste was white, and had a faint, pleasant aroma that reminded me of wintergreen.

The toothpaste felt “slippery” in my mouth, not tingly like a regular toothpaste. It didn’t foam at all either. When I had finished brushing, my mouth really did feel like it had been moisturized, not all dried out, which happens when I brush with regular toothpaste.

I’ve noticed that when I brush my teeth with this toothpaste before bed, I don’t have to sip as much water for a while as I usually do during the night, which is good.

There were only two slightly negative comments I have about the Orajel Dry Mouth Moisturizing Toothpaste. First, my mouth didn’t feel quite as clean as it does when I use a regular toothpaste, but this might only be because I’m still not used to using a toothpaste that doesn’t foam and tingle.

Second, I paid $6.49 for the tube, which I consider rather high. On the other hand, dry mouth is very annoying, and if a toothpaste can help alleviate some of the misery, I don’t mind paying that much for it.

Orajel Dry Mouth Moisturizing Toothpaste is available in a 4.5-ounce tube. The active ingredient in this toothpaste is Sodium monofluorophosphate (0.18% w/v fluoride ion). It is distributed by Del Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and made in the USA.

So far, I’ve only tried the toothpaste, but I believe there is now a new moisturizing mouth rinse available too. If you suffer from dry mouth, I recommend that you try a tube of Orajel Dry Mouth Moisturizing Toothpaste soon.
