Public Tennis in Tampa is on Serve

At first glance, Tampa, particularly South Tampa seems like the quintessential party city in Florida. It was heartening to realize that I did not have to move to Sarasota to engage in some quality tennis programs. Hillsborough Community College’s public tennis center coupled with that of Davis Island has brought my tennis activities to an all time high by providing well-kept courts at incredibly low prices and an abundance of eager competitors at all levels.

Hillsborough’s tennis center is located directly off Dale Mabry and provides intense, ample opportunities for competitive tennis at all levels. There are mixed double round robins Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The cost of 4 or 5 sets with partner switches every set is only $5.00. Not only do the matches break a sweat, but in between each set change provides a great opportunity to socialize and meet other tennis aficionados. There are plenty of courts to play on at all times of the day and week, costing only $5.00 an hour for a soft court and $2.50 for a hard court. I really suggest attending one of the round robin nights, especially if you are at a level between 3.0 and 4.5.

Davis Island’s Sandy Freedman center provides the same benefits as Hillsborough, but with a location and surrounding area unparalleled. Right on the bay, Davis Island is directly behind Tampa General Hospital and playing at the club makes you feel like you are at a world-class country club. Between the friendly staff, the prices and they quaintness, Davis Island provides yet another healthy alternative to joining a high-priced tennis club with long court waits.

You can always party somewhere in South Tampa, or Channelside, Ybor or downtown, but don’t forget the hidden tennis treasures. Davis Island and Hillsborough are only two of the prized public facilities available to the residents of South Tampa. Take advantage of them!
