Ramadan Activities for Children

Ramadan is a very important time of year for Muslims across the globe. Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and is when Muslims fast from sunup to sundown for exactly 30 days. This is a time where Muslims are able to get closer to Allah and they are able to learn more about the religion of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). Ramadan is a time where all Muslims are joyous and they are able to celebrate and establish their religion. Ramadan is very important for the Muslim children as it is for adults. That is why it is important as well as fun to participate in special Ramadan activities. Here is an exciting list of Ramadan activities for children to participate in during the holy month.

Masjid Craft Mobile
You will need:
�· Paper
�· Glue
�· Crayons, colored pencils, and glitter.
�· Hole puncher
�· String

An adult can draw a beautiful masjid design with a minaret. Then they can write an ayat or surah of the Qu’ran in the middle.

The design will have to be copied for the children.

The adult can recite the Qu’ranic verse for the children or have even have older children write their own verse onto the design.

The children can then color and decorate the design with colored pencils, crayons, and glitter.

The children will then need to paste them onto thin cardboard and cut around the outline of the masjid.

The children can then punch a hole in the top with a hole puncher and tie a string or ribbon through it in order to hang it from the ceiling.

Charity Decorated Jar

Ramadan is a very important time of the year where all Muslims need to be aware of the poor and needy. It is very important that Muslims share their wealth with those that are less fortunate and that need it more. Charity is very special in Islam and children should be taught about the beauty of sharing and giving. This activity can be a wealth of fun and can also teach them the wonders of paying zakat.

What you will need:
�· Jar (Either Glass or Plastic)
�· Construction paper
�· Stickers
�· Tape or glue
�· Any other special things the children may want to add

Have the children decorate the jar with the materials using stickers, construction paper and glue.

Explain to the children the importance of paying charity and then encourage them to put money into the jar everyday during Ramadan. At the end of Ramadan the children can decide to give their money to the Masjid or to other charity organizations that help those who are less fortunate.

Design Your Own Prayer Rug

What you will need:
�· Old pillow cases
�· Fabric glue
�· Fabric paint
�· Stickers

Have children lie out their pillowcases on the floor and then let them decorate them to their liking. This is a fun activity and it will serve a wonderful purpose once the prayer rug is complete.

Dhiker Beads

What you will need:
�· String
�· Colorful beads

Have the children sit in a circle and while and adult or the teacher talks about Allah’s 99 names. The children can then place exactly 99 beads onto their string and then have an adult tie the knot at the end of them if they need assistance. Once the children are done they can then practice making dhiker in order to get special rewards from Allah, Inshallah.

Ramadan Calendar Chain

What you will need:
Ã?· Colored construction paper cut approximately 8″ lengths, 30 strips for each child.
�· Glue

Have the children glue or staple links together with the construction paper until they have formed a long colorful chain of exactly 30 strips. The 30 strips will represent the month of Ramadan and everyday they can remove one of the strips from the chain. They can hang the chain in a hallway, doorway, or in their room. The children can even add special designs such as small cutouts of a masjid, a crescent moon, or a beautiful star. Make sure to remind the children that Ramadan can be either 29 or 30 days.

Night Sky and Moon

What you will need:

�· Black or blue construction paper
�· A stencil of a crescent moon.
�· Crayons, colored pencils, markers
�· Stick on stars
�· Cut out circles
�· Glitter pens

Use the construction paper for the night sky background. Use the stencil to trace a shape of a crescent moon. If the children are able, they can draw their own moon shape onto their paper with a white crayon. If the children can draw stars let them add them to their paper, or you can get star stickers and let them place the stickers where they choose. Holes can then be punched into the top of the page and their lovely design can hang for others to see.

A Qu’ran Party

What you will need:
Ã?· Qu’ran

This activity is fun as well as educational. This gathering will help the children with their memorization of the Qu’ran Inshallah. You can get a group of Muslim children together on a specific date and make sure that you assign each family to bring a special dish for a potluck dinner. You can even decorate the house and buy a delicious cake to share with everyone. You can make party bags or give presents to the children for participation. Have the children take turns reciting surahs out of the Qu’ran that they may know. Help the children learn small surahs, ie. Iklas or Asr and try to get everyone’s participation in the activity, even though they may be shy. The children can enjoy each other’s company and learn Qu’ran for the sake of ALLAH SWT.
