Review: Kelty Trail Dome 6 Tent

For a recent camping trip, a neighbor of mine lent me his Kelty Trail Dome 6 Tent since I could not decide which tent to buy for myself. After using this tent for four nights, I found that it lightweight, well constructed, and easy to set up.

My 12 and 10 year old sons set up this tent in under 10 minutes. There were only two poles and the clips attached to the fabric were color coded, making it easy to figure out where they went. It went up easily on the first try which is not something I can say about every tent my children have tried to construct.

After doing some research, I found that this tent sells for about $220. It feels like it will last for a very long time though so I would consider it worth the money. The body of the tent is made out of nylon taffeta which is surprisingly light for the strength it has. The floor is made of polyurethane coated nylon taffeta which did a great job of keeping us dry on the ground the night that it rained. My neighbor has gone on multiple trips with this tent and there were no holes anywhere in the material.

I have spent several nights in a tent in the rain before but I was pleasantly surprised by how well this tent did. We put up the rainfly before going to sleep and it kept all the water off the top AND sides of the tent. The rainfly has taped seams to better keep the water out.

The material and the poles are both very lightweight. We had to hike a couple miles to our campsite and I had no problem carrying this tent along with my backpack. Even being so lightweight, it is still recommended for the three seasons of spring, summer, and fall.

There are side-wall vents and a mesh ceiling to keep the air circulating. Due to the number of mosquitoes, we had to keep the tent zipped all the time but I still felt as though we had fresh air.

This tent comfortably fit two adults and my two children. We also had some room left over to put some gear inside. However, I don’t know if six adults would have much room in there even though it was designed for six.

This is a great tent for a family who is looking for a durable, lightweight place to sleep.
