Review of Pyrex Round Storage Bowls and Lids
These Pyrex bowls are quality, thick clear glass bowls, that come in three sizes: 2 cup, 4 cup and 7 cup. They all have tight fitting plastic lids, and the bowls nestle perfectly one inside the other. I am all for anything that takes up less space in my kitchen cupboards! If you have efficiency issues, these are for you.
The bowls are safe to use in oven, microwave, freezer, refrigerator, and dishwasher. The lids, however, should be washed in the top rack of the dishwasher. I usually stick them just inside the rack where my drinking glasses go. They fit nicely there and won’t move around in the dishwasher.
My Thoughts
I purchased this 14 piece set a few years ago at Costco, and since then I’ve purchased extra individual bowl and lids sets from my supermarket because I like them so much.
I do not like to store foods in plastic, and I especially don’t like microwaving foods in plastic containers. I have read that some plastics (specifically polyvinyl chloride, polycarbonate and plasticizers) will leach their chemicals into my food while I heat it in the microwave. I wouldn’t doubt it one bit. There have been similar studies done on plastic wrap. They are said to be endocrine disrupters because they emit substances that mimic hormones in our bodies. Whether they are or not, I just feel better using glass instead of plastic.
Because of this, I started weeding out most of my Tupperware and Rubbermaid storage bowls. I still have a few that I keep for taking something in the car, because I won’t have to worry about them breaking. But the majority of foods that I put in my fridge, whether they are leftovers, the mini carrots my hubby loves, or gravies and sauces, they are all stored in these Pyrex containers.
I remember well having some expensive Tupperware bowls permanently stained from spaghetti sauce – they would end up with that ugly tell tale orange ring around the inside edges. Pyrex containers will not stain, nor will they absorb any odors. (Tupperware will do that as well!). I have had a number of plastic bowls that have become discolored, along with those lingering smells, due to storing acidic tomato sauces or vinegar dressings in them.
Over the past few years the Pyrex bowls have held up exceptionally well. Only one of them has a small chip on the top edge, but it’s not really sharp. Pyrex is typically quite resilient. I have dropped these on my hard wood floor and they have not broken.
Another thing I use these bowls for is chopping nuts, eggs, or other foods with my hand held chopper. Because the bowls aren’t rounded at the bottom, (they have straight sides), foods are easy to chop. My husband has even taken to using the 2 cup bowl as his cereal bowl. They can be used for many things other than food storage.
These bowls go straight from my refrigerator to my microwave, making an easy lunch out of last nights leftovers. They also hold up well in the freezer, and do protect foods from freezer burn better than those freezer bags. I love the blue lids. No more messing with those clear plastic wraps that don’t always stick very well. These lids fit tightly, and I burp them to let excess air out of the bowl, and my foods remain fresh for several days.
The retail price for the 14-piece set of 7 bowls and 7 lids, is $32.00, but I know I paid much less than this at Costco. I absolutely love this set.
