He was a unanimous pick in 1990, when he finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting as the award went to BYU’s Ty Detmer. He became a starter on the 1988 national championship team and caught 12 passes for 331 yards and two touchdowns, and he returned 12 kickoffs for 433 yards and two touchdowns. In 1989, he ran the ball 64 times and gained 478 yards and two touchdowns, and he caught 27 passes for 535 yards. He also returned 20 kickoffs for 502 yards and two touchdowns, and returned seven punts for 113 yards and one touchdown. He was the Walter Camp Player of the year in 1990 when he ran the ball 67 times for 537 yards and three touchdowns. He caught 32 passes for 699 yards and two touchdowns, ran 14 kickoffs back for 336 yards and one touchdown , and returned 13 punts for 151 yards.

He had an outstanding football career at Meyers High School. He was coached by the legendary coach from Notre Dame, Mickey Gorhman . Wilkes-Barre has three high schools, Meyers, Coughlin, and G.A.R. As one would expect, the rivalry between the schools is fierce. Beating the other two city schools, and winning the Mayor’s Cup as the champion of Wilkes-Barre, is probably more important than winning the conference and making the playoffs. He had an outstanding career at Meyers and then went on to Notre Dame University.
