Route 66 Plus ATVs in Arizona

An ATV enthusiast can enjoy their ATVs while traveling through Arizona on what was once Route 66. Route 66 in Arizona begins in Lupton when coming from New Mexico and heading to California. When traveling out of New Mexico, the traveler should find himself or herself on the southern frontage road of I-40. Continue on the frontage road through Lupton and on to Hauck, where the frontage road will become a dirt road called Querino Dirt Road. Continue on Querino Dirt Road, cross Querino Canyon Bridge and enter I-40 at Exit 341. Exit I-40 at Exit 339 in Sanders and continue on the frontage road, which is McCarroll Road or CR 7060. Continue on CR 7060 to Chambers, and then reconnect with I-40 at Exit 333. Stay on I-40, pass through Navajo, Sun Valley, and come to Holbrook. In Holbrook, the ATV enthusiast will have the opportunity to enjoy their sport at Long Draw OHV Route. To get to Long Draw OHV Route exit I-40 at the Highway 77 exit to travel to the entrance of Long Draw OHV Route located off Highway 377.

Long Draw OHV Route, located in the Apache-Seagraves National Forest, Black Mesa Ranger District offers ATV enthusiasts a 30-mile loop as well as a staging area, toilets and campsites. For more information, contact the Black Mesa Ranger District at 928-535-4481.

After spending time at Long Draw OHV, the traveler should return to Holbrook, then head north on Highway 99 to I-40 to Winslow to continue on Route 66. In Winslow, leave I-40 at Exit 257, cross to the south side and take a right turn on BL-40, which is 3rd Street. Return to I-40 at Exit 252 and continue through Leupp Corner, Meteor City, Meteor Crater, Two Guns, Twin Arrows an on to Winona. In Winona, leave I-40 at Exit 211. Route 66 turns right onto Camp Townsend (or CR-394) and continues for about 10 miles before turning left at the intersection of US-89.

More ATV trails are available in this area at Cinder Hills OHV Area. Cinder Hills OHV Area is located East of US-89 and South of Sunset Crater or 12 miles Northeast of Flagstaff. Cinder Hills OHV Area offers 13,500 acres of Ponderosa Pine and deep volcanic cinders. Camping areas are available in certain areas. After spending time at the Cinder Hills OHV Area, the traveler can return to Route 66 in Flagstaff on US-89. Continue on US-89 through Flagstaff, cross the Rail Road tracks onto Milton Road. Continue to US-89 until I-40 Exit 191. Take this exit, return to I-40, and continue to Belmont, AZ. Route 66 leaves I-40 in Belmont on Exit 185 and continues on the frontage road west to Branning Park Road, on through Branning Park. Branning Park Road then becomes Parks Road and continues to Parks, AZ. Parks Road will then become Wagon Wheel Road and old Route 66 will continue past the Autotour sign and turns right on a gravel road known as Deer Farm Road. Route 66 will then turn onto Garland Prairie Road and continues for two-tenths of a mile before turning right on Mountain Man Trail. Route 66 then travels right onto old AZ-64, and continues to the intersection of US-66 and turns west on US-66 towards Williams. In Williams, continue traveling on US-66, travel under the railroad, turn right on Rodeo Road, then left on Airport Road. Next, turn right on Edison Avenue then left on Grand Canyon Avenue. Cross the railroad tracks, take a right turn on Railroad Avenue then continue through Williams and join I-40 at Exit 161. Route 66 continues on I-40 to Ash Fork. While in this area, ATV enthusiasts can enjoy Sheridan Mountain OHV Trail System.

Sheridan Mountain OHV Trail System, located in Prescott National Forest, offers ATV enthusiasts 42 miles of rugged and remote trails. After enjoying riding this trail system, return to Ash Fork on I-40.

In Ash Fork, Route 66 leaves I-40 at Exit 146 and turns right onto Lewis Avenue or BL-40. Continue through town to Exit 144 and travel on I-40 to Exit 139 or Crookton Road. Route 66 turns right on Crookton Road and heads west across the railroad tracks on AZ-66 to Seligman AZ and through Chino, Pica, Deer Lodge, Hype Park, Grand Canyon Caverns Village, Nelson, Peach Springs, Truxton, Cozier, Valentine, Hackberry, Antares, Valle Vista, then on to Kingman where AZ-66 becomes Andy Devine Avenue. Continue traveling on Andy Devine Avenue, passing under I-40 at Exit 51 to AZ-66, where Route 66 turns left and follows the railroad through the narrow canyon. Turn right on Shinarump Drive or CR-10, pass under I-40 and continue past the on ramp. Turn left onto Oatman Road or CR-10 through Fig Springs, Cool Springs, Ed’s Camp, Sitgraves Pass, Goad Road, Oatman, Old Trails, and Golden Shores and onto Topock. Get back on I-40 at Exit 1, and then cross into California.
