Salon Highlights of Orange County

Since moving to the beautiful, hip, fashionable area of Southern California, I have been on the hunt for a new stylist, hoping someday to find a replacement for my soulmate in scissors that I left behind in Texas.
I searched and searched, my roots growing more embarrassingly obvious every day. Finally, I turned to the Aveda website in search of a salon. Aveda highlights have always been the gentlest on my fine, fragile hair, delivering high lift with the least amount of damage.

After entering my zipcode, a list popped up, and I clicked on the John Michael Salon, located in Irvine. After a quick review of the website, I called to book an appointment – and I needed one fast, as I had an important event that weekend.
I spoke with John Michael himself, and he was very cheery and helpful. Unfortunately, the only spot he had open was early the next week, which I took, resigning myself to a two-toned look. Hey, it could be kind of indie rock, right?

But, fortune smiled upon me, and John Michael considerately called back to let me know he’d had a cancellation on Saturday morning if I would like to take the open spot. I accepted gratefully, and the date was set.

Saturday morning arrived, and I followed the directions John Michael had given. He was very adamant that I take his directions instead of using MapQuest, and once I was off the highway, I was glad I had. The tiny salon is tucked away in the business district of Irvine, easy to miss if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

Don’t be put off by the small size of the salon itself, though. I only waited a few minuted before John Michael had whisked me into his chair. I explained the general idea of what I wanted, and, seized by artistic vision, John Michael darted off to whip up the color.
A word of warning: John Michael, while quite professional, is, well, eccentric; although I’ve found that most hairstylists with true talent often are. Alternately charming and solemn, he goes about his work, occasionally piping up with an observation or compliment whilst peering at your reaction through his glasses. If you prefer the person bobbing around your head to be perky and sweet, this may not be the place for you.
However, once all was said and done, the foils removed, and my hair expertly though unconventionally blowdried, I was left with a lovely angelic golden blond. Even better, my follicles were in excellent condition.
John Michael dispersed some truly excellent advice about the products I had been using versus what I should have been using, and sent me off with an excellent conditioner.

I’ll go back once my roots rear their ugly heads, but I’m not ready to settle down yet. Something tells me that The One With The Blowdryer is still out there, waiting for me. Until then, I have John Michael as my backup, and a solid one at that.
