Salons in Baltimore

If you are looking for a salon in Baltimore, there are several good ones depending on your taste. There are also some to avoid. This review will provide you with what you need to know before you get your hair cut or your nails done.

FX studio, voted Best of Baltimore 2005 by City Paper, is not only a haircut, it is an experience. Along with getting your hair cut or your nails done, you can enjoy a drink and watch a movie on one of the large cinema screens. FX touts itself as “the nation’s first cinematic salon and spa,” and it is certainly a unique concept. Unique, however, does not mean hokey – I have a friend who swears by the haircuts that FX provides.

Haircuts start at $28 for men and $45 for women. However, haircuts aren’t the only service offering. Men can enjoy being pampered by a 45 minute “gentleman’s hot shave,” done the old-fashioned way with lots of hot towels. Women can enjoy impacco treatment from Milan. Both men and women can have their hair colored at reasonable prices.

Besides hair care, FX also does skin care (facials and such), massage therapy (deep tissue, aroma therapy, hot stone and others), esthetic hair removal (waxing, etc), and nail care (polishing, manicures, and nail repair).

There are several “experience” packages, such as the Director’s Cut (haircut, facial, massage, hand and foot care) that run between $120 – $250. You can purchase gift certificates online at their website.

You can’t help but have fun when you go to Caesars Forum. The whole place has the air of kitschy Baltimore charm, from the life size mannequin that greets you at the door, to the piles of Little Debbie snack cakes that sit in the waiting area. For a while they offered alcoholic drinks right when you came in, but they have since been offering me only non-alcoholic drinks, so I’m not sure if they continued this practice. Regardless, this is a great place to get your haircut.

The entire place was decorated with a Greek theme by its personable owner, who is from there. She really loves what she does and it shows. The staff is generally young and fun to talk to, but the entire place definitely has an alternative, edgy, down home feel. That’s not to say you won’t feel welcome if you don’t fit this category. I especially love the Sirius Satellite Radio that plays inside – a nice touch!

Haircuts are cheap, starting at around $15, and the wait isn’t generally very long. In addition to hair care, Caesars Forum also offers several other services: waxing, massage, and nail care are offered.

This is definitely the place to come if you are looking for a good, quick, inexpensive haircut at a place where you will enjoy the experience.

Hair Cuttery
White Marsh Plaza, 7972 Honeygo Boulevard
Baltimore, MD 21236
Phone: 410-931-7199

Hair Cuttery offers basic services to the suburban mall crowd. I got my hair cut here once before I discovered Caesars Forum. The cut is a little expensive for what you get, because the place lacks personality. The woman who cut my hair was nice, but she seemed intent on getting out of work as soon as possible (I went after work on a Tuesday.) Hair Cuttery is fine for a quick, simple men’s haircut if you are out at the mall anyway, but this is certainly not a destination salon.

Hair Cuttery offers basic services such as cut and color, but doesn’t offer the extras, such as nail care and massage, that you can find at the other two. I only recommend going here if you are at the mall and in need of a quick, simple haircut.
