Should Your Teen Join the Military After High School?

For some parents this is a very touchy subject, especially considering the fact that we are currently at war with Iraq. But should your teenager really consider joining the army after they graduate high school? Well lets first look at one of the main reasons why people join the army right out of high school.

One reason is because they can not afford college and just about everyone knows the military is willing to pay for your school if you give them a few years of military service. But is it really worth it. Well from the government’s point of view it definitely is. But for parent’s the answer is usually no. Take a look at how the government has treated the military lately. Parents have to send boxes of supplies to their children over in Iraq, because the government can not even give them some of the necessities that they need.

The other problem is that they are just not begin trained as efficiently as they were in the past. Now it is just about training you as quickly as possible and getting you out into the line of fire. The problem with that method is that so many are dying because of it. When they come to visit the high schools to try and recruit they fill their heads with so much. They guarantee that their schools will be paid for. But of course that is only if you live long enough to complete it. Of course their is the money and experience that you gain.

That is great but what good is experience of you end up injured at war and then you can not perform those duties. So many of the veterans in this country constantly complain about how they feel abandoned after years of service. There are those who just seem to have no other option. They do it so that their families no longer have to struggle and suffer. Don’t’ forget that there are still many places in the United States where millions of children do not get the education’s that they need in order to survive as adults. So you see there really is no other option for some.

When trying to decide if the military is best for your teen, you should sit down and talk together as a family. Make a list of the pros and cons. Then you will be able to decide if this is really something for you. Even if you are against it, try to be as open as possible. If you automatically reject it then they will just do it anyway. So listen to what they have to say, and they will do the same for you.
