Silent Movie Era Napkin Rings

What you need:
Empty paper towel roll
Black chalkboard paper
Card stock circles
White paint pen

An exciting party, where you and the guests will laugh until you struggle to breathe, is a silent movie era party. It’s a hysterical way to enjoy time with family and friends while creating new, fun memories. Guests – male or female – can walk around with stick mustaches, and dress like they did in the silent movie era. And, as far as the decorations go, you’ll find that decorating for a silent movie era party is fast and easy. When you use chalkboard paper, for instance, you can quickly make napkin buttons – napkin rings – that go right along with the chosen theme.

Roll the napkin the way that you want to. It can have silverware rolled along with it, or not. Measure around the rolled napkin to get an idea of how large the ring needs to be. A circle of cardboard, cut from a bathroom tissue or paper towel roll, can often be the perfect ring for a napkin. But you can also cut a strip of thin cardboard and roll it into a ring shape. Paint it, or cover it with contact paper, so it no longer looks so plain.

A circle of card stock becomes the button on top of the napkin ring. Slide the napkin into the ring, and then make the button. Start with a white or black card stock circle and use a piece of black chalkboard paper to cover it. Cut the chalkboard paper to be the exact same size as the card stock circle, peel the backing off of the paper, and stick it to the card stock.

Instead of using chalk, as most people do with chalkboard paper, use a permanent, white paint pen. There are a lot of silent movie era words and phrases that can be used on the chalkboard buttons. Write “Pardon me, mademoiselle”, “Ah-ha”, or another phrase. The white lettering, on the black chalkboard paper, is reminiscent of the black and white films. You might want to watch one online to get an idea of phrases that you could use for the napkin buttons, as well as borders that were often done around phrases.

The silent movie era theme gives you plenty of opportunities to decorate in a black and white motif for a party or just for movie night with the family. There are many other accents that you can create for the table when you use chalkboard paper and a white paint marker. Make napkin rings, cupcake toppers, and more; it’s going to be a lot of fun!
