Skiing in New York State

If you are looking to get out and enjoy the winter weather skiing is always an exhilarating way to do so. New York State boasts a great number of ski resorts that have something for every member of the family. It’s not just about skiing anymore either; you can slide down the hill on a tube or fly down the slopes on a snowboard. If you are traveling to New York in the winter months here are some great resorts from all around the state.

Greek Peak Mountain Resort

Greek Peak is located at 2000 NYS Route 392 in Cortland, New York. They offer both downhill and cross country skiing along with snowboarding, snow tubing and snowshoeing. They offer ski packages for children, beginners and the seasoned skier. Night skiing is available seven days a week.

Here you will find 24 trails for every level of skill. If you are new to skiing you can take advantage of their ski lessons and ski rental. Greek Peak offers childcare and four different dining facilities. There are a variety of accommodations if you wish to stay longer than a day. They also have ski patrol and a ski shop.

The average yearly snowfall at Greek Peak is 122 inches and their average ski season is 113 days long. The longest ski run here is one and a half miles and the steepest ski run is forty degrees. This resort has snowmaking capabilities.

Hunter Mountain

Hunter Mountain is located on Route 23A in Hunter, New York. Hunter offers downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and snowshoeing. There is ice-skating, snowmobiling and horseback riding located nearby.

This resort offers 53 different ski trails for every experience level. This facility has 100% snowmaking capabilities. Hunter offers skiing lessons for both the adult and child skier. There is childcare available for the little ones and a large variety of dining options. You can stay at the resort if you wish or in nearby accommodations.

The vertical drop at Hunter Mountain is 1600 feet. They have 1,100 snow making machines so snow is never an issue.

Snow Ridge Ski Area

Snow Ridge is located on Route 26 in Turin, New York. Here you will find downhill skiing, snowboarding and a wide range of events on their activities calendar.

They have 22 trails for all experience levels and some snowmaking capabilities. Snow Ridge offers childcare, ski lessons and have a ski patrol. They also have ski repair, ski shop and ski rental shops. Lodging and dining facilities are available.

Whiteface Mountain

Whiteface is located at Route 86, Wilmington, New York, near Lake Placid. Here you will find downhill skiing, snowboarding and just about any other winter sport imaginable. Whiteface Mountain was part of the Winter Olympics at Lake Placid.

This resort has 74 trials with the longest being three and a half miles long. Slopes are available for all levels of skiing. Whiteface offers ski and snowboarding lessons for people of all ages and experience levels. Accommodations and dining are available. You will also find ski shop and repair here along with a family operated ski patrol.

Swain

Swain is located on County Route 24 in Swain, New York. They offer downhill skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing. Swain also has night skiing available.

There are 21 trails here for every level of experience along with ski patrols, lessons and childcare. They also have a ski shop and repair service on site along with great dining facilities and accommodations.

Swain opens at the end of November and remains open until the beginning of April. Actual times will depend on climate conditions. Swain has 97 percent snow making capabilities and a vertical drop of 650 feet. The annual snowfall here is 130 inches and their longest trail is 5,280 feet.
