Snowman Made from Cake Containers

I am always looking for a way to reuse containers of all kinds. I reuse plastic grocery bags as trash can liners for the small trash cans in my house, butter tubs for sending leftovers home with family and friends, and I even save Altoids tins to store buttons, pins, or other sewing items. Plastic cake containers are another item that I reuse, usually for storing baked goods of some kind. Recently while stacking some of these I got an idea to use these to make a holiday window dressing. It is similar to the Christmas tree made from baby food jars people made years ago.

These plastic cake containers come in many different sizes and are either round or rectangle. The cover is clear while the base is black. My thought was to use these to make a snowman that I could display in my window.

To make a cake container snowman you will need one large, one medium, and one small round plastic cake container. You can use two large and one small, or use rectangle ones if you prefer. You will also need one can of white spray paint, one small string of clear lights (the type that are not hot to the touch), scissors, clear-drying glue, one old stocking hat, one old scarf, two small tree branches, clean Styrofoam meat tray, and a permanent marker.

First, out of doors, spray paint each base white on both sides and let them thoroughly dry. Next, mark the backs or bottoms of the bases where the Christmas lights will go through and cut small cross on these marks with the scissors.

Using the permanent marker, draw a snowman face on the top of the lid of the small cake container. Cut one small circle on each side of the medium or middle cake container for the tree branches. Stack the three plastic cake containers together to resemble a snowman with the small one on top, then the medium one (holes on either side), and then the large one on the bottom, glue in place and let dry. Your snowman may have difficulty standing up on a round bottom, so glue the clean Styrofoam meat tray to the bottom container to act as a base.

Attach the prepared bases to the lids and glue in place. Next, insert one Christmas light into each small cross on the back of the bases, until all holes are filled, (it is your preference as to how many lights you want to use). Be sure to insert each light bulb all the way through the hole. Glue in place as needed.

Lastly, place the stocking hat on the top, tie the scarf between the small and medium containers, and stick the tree branches in the pre-cut holes on the middle container.

Set your cake container snowman in a window, under a tree, or on your front porch.
