Some Useful Tips for Installing Ceramic Tile on Tub and Shower Stall Walls
1. Decide which areas need new tiles.
2. Measure the surface areas where the tiles will be installed.
3. You do not want to use tiles that are too large. Usually, the 4″ X 4″ tiles are the best for these areas.
4. Similarly, you do not want tiles that have rough surface to avoid staining and mold formation.
5. You have to measure and plan if you want to add accents or patterns in the area to be worked on.
6. You can also factor in the addition of soap / shampoo holder if you want to.
7. Don’t forget to rent a tile cutter because the tiles may need to be adjusted to fit the edges.
8. You will also need Contractor’s Drill Machine to install the shower door or the shower curtain rod, as needed.
9. Prepare the surfaces properly to get long-lasting result. Patch up the defects, wait for that to set hard, and then sand it down. You can also save time and create a hard, even surface by installing “Hardiback” or “Wonder Board”.
10. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for each of the materials that will be used.
11. Get the glue and grout recommended by the manufacturer, paying attention to the compatibility with the tiles bought.
12. Use the tile adhesive or mortar sparingly. Make sure the glue does not get smudged on the tile surfaces or edges. If it does happen, wipe it off right away with a damp but not wet piece of cloth or sponge. Keeping your hands clean is important to avoid such problem.
13. Use spacers to align the tiles with even gaps.
14. Leave a 1/4″ gap from the bathtub and the wall edges to allow for expansion. That gap is usually filled with grout and along the bathtub area with waterproof caulking.
15. Don’t forget to use something as simple as a sheet of straight plywood to maintain an even plane while installing the tiles. It is extremely important to make sure that the opposing walls are absolutely parallel so that there is no problem with the installation of the shower door. It may not be an absolute necessity in the case of a shower curtain rod.
16. Once the tiles are in place, apply grout to cover up all the gaps. The grout should not contain too much sand to prevent porousness. Otherwise, it will result in staining and mold formation.
17. Excess grout can be wiped off with a damp sponge right away. Ideally, you should wait for 24 hours before performing the final cleanup.
18. Also, you can use a water and stain repellent solution on the grout areas after complete setting. Now, wait for a few more hours before use!
