South Park Season Six: The Year of Chaos

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have certainly raised the bar of satire and offensive humor higher with their little show about four lovable foul-mouthed little boys. However, just when it seems that these two comic geniuses have done all that they can possibly do with South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone deliver more insanity and bigger laughs, with the show’s sixth season. Now South Park the complete sixth season is available in a DVD boxed set, for everyone to enjoy whenever they want.

Now that Kenny has been laid to rest, Stan, Kyle and Cartman use Butters to fill in the void left by their dead friend. After a few adventures, the boys decide to fire Butters and replace him with Tweek in a contest like reality TV’s “the Bachelor.” Hurt from rejection, Butters becomes the evil Professor Chaos in order get revenge upon the world that has spurned him. Unfortunately for Butters, he is not a very good super villain, despite his dastardly plans, many of which are copies from episodes of the Simpsons.

Aside from the machinations of Professor Chaos, Stan, Kyle, and Cartman go through various misadventures such as saving baby cows from becoming veal, and skiing through the challenges in Aspen. The boys must also stop Bebe’s boobs from destroying the world and rescue Santa Claus after his sleigh is shot down in Iraq. Cartman also makes astounding discoveries such as semen and sea people equals sea-ciety. Towards the end of the season, Kenny sort of returns when Cartman mistakenly drinks Kenny’s ashes for chocolate milk.

Amidst the various adventures the boys have, this season also introduces to new Characters, such as Mr. Lou Kim, the owner and operator of City Wok, South Park, and Mr. Slave, Mr. Garrison’s new teaching assistant, after he is made teacher of the Fourth Grade. The sixth season also gives us the adventure of Lemmiwinks, the gerbil who had to survive the journey through Mr. Slave’s intestines. Sadly, while South Park gains new characters, the she loses Ms. Choksondik to a mysterious death.

South Park is known to poke fun at celebrities, so like the previous seasons, the sixth season has its share of celebrity targets. In the episode titled “Free Hat,” the boys form a club in an attempt to prevent George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, from ruining their movies by “updating” them. In another episode, the boys are forced to watch Russell Crowe’s travel the world fighting people and singing songs before they can see the trailer for Terrance and Philip’s new movie.

South Park hits two birds with one stone with the episode “Biggest Douche in the Universe” first by debunking television Psychic John Edward, and shows Rob Schneider being a derp-de-derp-a-diddly-dum. In the Sixth Season, South Park also makes fun of other TV celebrities such as Maury Povich and Jared the Subway sandwich guy.

There aren’t many special features to South Park the complete sixth season; in fact there is really only one special feature to the box set. Like the previous three box sets, Seasons three, four and five, the only special feature is the audio commentaries for each by the South Park Creators. Although it may not be much in terms of special features, the commentaries are very funny and also give some brief insights not just for each episode, but for the development of the entire season as well.

The Sixth season of South Park, the year without Kenny and the Reign of Chaos, is the season where the jokes and the adventures get more outrageous. This show certainly has not lost any steam, and continues to get funnier and more offensive with each passing year. On a scale of five stars, South Park the complete sixth season gets a rating of a full five stars.

So, while South Park may now be on broadcast television and edited for syndication or still shown on Comedy Central in re-runs, this box set is still worth having. It is definitely an instant treasure in any DVD collection, not only for the avid South Park Fan, but also for someone who animated comedies for adults.
