Special Mom-and-Pop Businesses in Chicago

To know me is to know I love and support the little guys. Believe it or not, even in a big city like Chicago, we can still find room in our hearts for the mom and pops of the world. As a matter of fact, many of us prefer these charming little businesses and will go out of our way to pay them a visit. The big corporations are all well and good. But for me, these places deserve your attention.

Record Emporium
773-248-1821
3346 N Paulina St
Chicago, IL 60657

This record store has a special place in my heart. For starters, they are NOT “the man” – Record Emporium is owned and operated by one man, Mike Felten. Record Emporium is part of the dying breed of wonderful old time record stores. You will sense a lot of love and heart here. Mike is also a talented musician so he knows his stuff. He has classic old vinyl, new and used CDs, the coolest posters and t-shirts, and in-store live performances. Go and support this local businessman and you will gain so much all the way around!

Pick-A-Cup Coffee Club
847-332-2834
1813 W. Dempster
Evanston, IL 60201

Yes, we all know that Starbucks is good and loved by millions. But you will never find the kind of charm, warmth and homey decor as you will at Pick a Cup. You walk into this place and it’s like being in the home of a dear friend. Their spacious room is filled with soft, cozy chairs and sofas and a ton of personality. Owner Carol Kent and her staff go out of their way to welcome you, so relax, have some coffee or snacks, grab a book or even play a game of chess. They have delicious specialty coffee drinks, smoothies, sweets and other goodies. On Thursday nights, they have an open mic. Bring your guitar and a bunch of friends and just hang out for a while. (On the night I was there Eddie Van Halen jammed on stage) Okay. I confess. That last sentence is a lie, but I got your attention; besides, you never know who will show up! I love this place and hope to see more people support indie business owners who deserve a chance to compete with the “Big Guys of Coffee!”

King Coral
773-283-5618
5541 W. Montrose
Chicago, IL 60641

Here’s a small store that deserves your attention. Looking for a special friend to join the family? This place has the coolest creatures in town. Whether you fancy those lovely tropical or gold fish, or want to welcome in a parakeet, salamander or snake (eek!) to your home, be sure and visit this hidden gem. I am proud to say that my apartment is filled with the cutest little guys to ever grace a fish tank, courtesy of King Coral. Yep, my own Harpo, Groucho and Chico, as well as Stan and Ollie, came from King Coral. (Notice how my fish are all named after the comedy greats? How fun is THAT?!)
