Spring Cleaning Tips – Prepare Window Unit Air Conditioner for Summer
The first thing you need to do is remove the filter and replace it. Even if it looks as though it’s in fantastic condition, you should still get a new filter each season. Often times the things that are damaging are the things that are not visible with the naked eye. Especially with the filter.
The next thing is to take a clean damp rag and clean the entire exterior of the air-conditioner. Clean the outer part of the frame. Clean the inside edges of the unit. Get in the vents and wipe down the outside of the air-conditioner. The more thorough that you are with this job, the cleaner the air you are going to get pushed into your home.
The final step that you would take to clean out your air-conditioner for the summer is to go outside of your house. Once outside, you want to clean all the debris out of the back of air-conditioner that has accumulated over the winter. Do not assume that there is no debris out there. Trust me, there will be more debris then you think caked into the crevices of the air conditioner. Take a damp rag and wipe it down entirely. Also, take the time while you are out there to pick those nasty weeds that have grown up around the edges of the air conditioner. In my case, the unit sits close to the ground, and my weed-eater spent way too much time in storage this winter.
Keeping your window unit air-conditioner running properly is not that difficult as long as you take the time to clean it properly. To me, there is nothing like the sweet sounds of a window unit air-conditioner to help me drift off to sleep on those hot summer nights. Central air, certainly has its merits, but I still like my old school window unit air conditioner. If you are like me, and take these steps, then you will be a whole lot cooler this summer.
