Strawberry Picking in Wisconsin

Anticipating the crops for summer strawberries? Excited about the prospect of homemade strawberry shortcake? There’s no better way to fulfill your strawberry field of dreams this summer with freshly picked strawberries ripe off the bush! Wisconsin is home to a variety of farms that allow visitors to hand pick their own bushels of strawberries, and the season calls for baskets galore.

Enjoy one of summer’s favorite treats in homemade jam, preserved to use as a fruit topping on ice cream, dipped in chocolate for dessert, or simply at its best on its own. Strawberry picking opportunities abound in Wisconsin, and strawberry picking is a seasonal activity to enjoy with your family and friends. Strawberry picking season in Wisconsin is available from mid June to the end of July at the following locally owned farms. When you decide to step out for some strawberry picking, do observe these Do’s and Don’ts:

Do wear sunscreen and a hat as you will be out in the field for an extended period of time
Do be sure to bring containers to carry your pickings home in!
Do respect the farm’s other crops and personal property
Do bring cash, as most farms do not accept other forms of payment
Do be courteous and don’t eat your strawberries before you pay for them!
Don’t overpick; it’s easy to overestimate how many strawberries you need, and if you don’t have a way to preserve them, you may find that they turn rotten fairly quickly (especially organic)
Do call the farm ahead for hours and pricing information; some farms offer pre-picking options and special pricing
Do take the time to learn about preserving tips and tricks from your local farmer; most are more than willing to help!
Do check to see what year-round events and activities the farm has available; many offer hay rides, corn mazes, and other fruit and vegetable offerings at various times of the year.

Find the closest strawberry patch in your local area, or visit Wisconsin on your next road trip to take part in your new strawberry picking tradition. You don’t want to miss this year’s strawberry season!
