Summer School in Houston Texas

Houston Independent School District offers many summer school programs for their students. The majority of the students enrolled in these programs will be attending recovery courses offered in high schools throughout the district, while other students will be attending courses for advancement of their education. Recovery courses are free for students of HISD and require a fee for students from out-of-district while advancement courses have fees for both types of students. Breakfast and lunch are served during summer school and some transportation is provided.

Lamar High School, located at 3325 Westheimer, offers credit recovery and advancement courses. Advancement classes for summer school begin at 7:50 am, end at 2:05 pm, and will go from June 6 to July 7, with July 4 as a holiday. These days are divided into two class periods. Houston Night High School, located at 1906 Cleburne, offers advanced courses that allow students to accumulate additional credits that will count toward graduation. ALTA Charter School, located at 8329 Lawndale, offers a summer program called Tuition Waiver for LEP/Immigrant Studies. This summer program is offered to LEP/immigrant students who need credit accrual coursework to graduate and have been referred by their High School Counselor. This program runs from July 3 to July 28, goes from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and is divided into 3 periods per day. Several schools offer Intensive English Summer School from June 1 to June 28. These schools are Chavez High School, Houston High School, Milby High School, Sharpstown High School and Davis High School. Intensive English Summer School offers an accelerated English language development program for LEP/immigrant students. These students must be referred for this program by their High School Counselor. Lee High School and Sharpstown High School offer the Accelerated High School ESL Coursework Summer School Program. This program covers ESL World Geography as well as Government and Economics and is offered to LEP/Immigrant students who have been referred by their High School counselor, and are in need of these courses for credit accrual. Davis High School offers Summer School Programs in Government and Economic Acceleration for 11th grade students who will be 12th grade students in the school year 2006 – 2007. Westside High School offers Summer School Programs for its students who wish to advance their education. Summer School at this location offers Health, Speech, Art, and Chemistry Pre-AP that will need to be finished before being able to take additional courses the following regular school year. Summer School Programs are available through the Houston Independent School District at many different locations. Fees are $150 per course for HISD residents and $200 for non-HISD residents. No checks are accepted for any tuition. Any HISD student considering attending summer school must have a Summer School Counselor Approval Form from their counselor before registration for the summer school program they wish to attend. Students from outside HISD must have a letter from their counselor stating that they recommend the courses they are interested in taking.
