Teach Your Teenager How to Have a Safe Graduation Party
There are several steps that you can take to make sure that your child’s graduation party is enjoyable but still kept under control. First you will want to make sure that you and several other parents are present. Of course your teenager may object to this at first, but there is a way to compromise. You can have a little party for yourself in another room but at the same location this way you can keep an eye on things but at the same time give them their space.
The next thing that you will want to do is make sure that you know everyone that your teenager is inviting. Sit down and write up the list together, this way they will not invite any trouble makers and you will not invite any adults they may not particularly care for. Remember this is still a party for them so try not to be to restrictive. But make it very clear that anyone on their list that you do not know can not attend the party.
Make sure you explain the reason behind it. They will respect you a lot more for your decisions if they understand why, other than the fact that you are paying for everything. You will also want to allow them to have a say in where the party is being thrown. Unlike younger children, teenagers who are graduating from high school are practically adults and if they have successfully passed twelve years of school they have a right to be treated as such. Depending on the location let them decide on the type of decorations and on the menu. Of course if it is something that is completely inappropriate then you will want to put your foot down.
In order to maintain control over the party and not have your teenager feel like they are being treated like a baby, it is important to make sure you let them know of any problems that may occur at the party. Then give them the opportunity to correct the problem. This will help to keep your child from being embarrassed at their own party, and will make them feel more like an adult. Let them know when you are planning the party that this is what will be done, so that they are not nervous about what you may do. Reinforce the fact that you trust them to keep control over the party, but make sure you keep a watchful eye over what occurs. A graduation party should be an enjoyable time for everyone especially for your young adult.
