Ten Reasons Why You Should Not Buy the Diaper Genie!

If you have a baby or are about to have one or have ever been to a baby shower then you have probably heard of the very famous diaper genie. It seems like each year they come out with a new and improved model that is supposed to be better than the last one. But after using this product and speaking to other parents who have also purchased and used this product I have come up with a list of ten reasons why you should not even waste the money.

1. It does not conceal the odor. According to the manufacturer this special diaper genie is supposed to be able to conceal the odor of a dirty diaper. Well after trying this out first hand I can tell you that it definitely does not. You can do the same thing with a regular garbage can and a garbage bag. If you tie the bag up you get the same amount of odor control that you actually get from the diaper genie.

2. It is not worth the price. The money that you invest in the initial purchase of the new diaper champ is about thirty dollars. While this may not seem like it is too expensive, don’t forget that you will still have to pay an additional fifteen to sixteen dollars for the refill packs, although they say that you can use regular garbage bags. This is something that you will usually have to do about three to four times a month. When compared with an extra large pack garbage bags it really does seem to be a waste of money. In addition to that it just does not conceal the odor.

3. Not very big. When it comes to baby diapers lets face it there are going to be a whole lot of them. The thing that I really did not like about the diaper genie is that it does not hold very much. Of course you would not allow the diapers to sit very long anyway, but you should at least be able to make it through one day without changing the pail three or four times. It just really seemed liked it created a lot more work for me.

4. Too much work to dispose of one dirty diaper. This diaper genie is really supposed to make life for parents a whole lot easier, but I would definitely have to say that it does not. When you compare it with regular garbage pail that has a little foot pedal that you just step on it is really ridiculous. Another problem with disposing of the diapers is that as your child gets older the diapers get bigger and they just do not end up fitting like they should. So that being the case it is only good for about the first three months.

5. It has to constantly be disinfected. As with any garbage can you will have to make sure that you constantly disinfect it, but with the diaper genie it seems that you have to disinfect after every diaper change. Every time you put in a new diaper and turn you smell the odor from the other diapers. This is even if you put the diaper in a garbage bag before putting it into the diaper genie. It should at least last for a few days without having to constantly be disinfected.

6. Not as sturdy as a garbage can. As your child gets older they will obviously start to walk around and explore the house. Being that most parents keep the diaper genie in their room it is usually one of the first things that they find interesting. Unlike a garbage can that is usually a lot more stable and difficult for them to get into, the diaper genie is very easy for any young child to nock over and in my case empty. I would say you can just put it in another room, but that really seems to defeat the entire purpose of having one in the first place.

7. The refill packs do not give added odor protection. According to the manufacture the refill stage two packs are supposed to give extra added protection against the odor, even stronger than stage one. I regret to say that my own did not. I actually compared this with a regular garbage can with regular garbage bags and the regular garbage can worked better.

8. It might look nicer if it was better decorated. I asked several parents that if the manufacture of the diaper genie actually put some kind of cartoon character design on the diaper genie would this make it a little more appealing to them. The answer was yes. It may be the last thing that some parents think about, but when you are decorating your nursery you usually have some type of special theme going on. This is especially the case since they make garbage cans for kid’s rooms that actually have the cartoon characters design on them.

9. The flip handle does not work properly. Many parents including myself have had problems using the flip handles. In my case it may have been because the diapers were too big. But after you invest your thirty dollars you would expect the diaper genie to be able to handle any diaper, and to work properly. It just seems a little on the flimsy side.

10. It is not able to be used for anything other than for diapers. I realize that it was only made to be used for diapers, but with a regular garbage can you can continue to use it as your child grows. So instead of buying the diaper genie and getting rid of it after using it for one year it may be a better idea to just buy a children’s garbage can that they can use for ten years and more.

The bottom line is that it is really up to you the parent if you want to use the diaper genie or not. Just take some time to consider some of the things that I have written here, and determine for yourself whether a regular garbage can or the diaper genie is better for your family.
