Tennis with the Beverly Hills Stars

Beverly Hills is home to some of the moist exquisite hotels in the country. It’s a shame most people don’t wander beyond the shimmering pools and venture out to the tennis courts. Sure, spa treatment menus can be alluring when seeking some rest and relaxation, but they are nothing compared to a great workout along with an effective tennis lesson..

Insiders know the Beverly Hills Hotel offers two of the most charming tennis courts in California. Book a lesson with David or Alex Olmedo and I guarantee you’ll see an improvement in your game.

The hotel was founded in 1912 by Margaret Anderson and has hosted numerous celebrities over the years. Known for the famous Polo Lounge Restaurant and manicured grounds, the hotel also offers tennis lovers a wonderful chance to brush up their skills with tennis lessons. The lighted courts are a perfect setting to unwind after a grueling day of negotiating or a cross-country flight. Working out with a pro will guarantee you burn more than the average 470 calories an hour you normally work off playing singles.

The hard surface tennis courts set amongst gorgeous landscaping are in wonderful shape. Head Tennis Pro and Wimbledon Champion, Alex Olmedo offers both hourly and half-hour sessions-just the ticket to whip your backhand into shape. Alex was the 1959 Wimbledon Singles Champion and he’s very generous with his knowledge. When calling to set up the session, let Alex know what part of your game needs work. Whenever I visit, I ask for a challenging session; I want to get my money’s worth and a good workout. Alex keeps you scampering across the court pushing your skills and your fitness level.

First, Alex will send some easy volleys your way for a warm-up. Before long, you’ll be slamming backhands and firing forehands from the baseline and grunting like Venus in the finals. Of course, if you want to have a leisurely session, that can also be arranged. Just be sure to communicate clearly to the instructor what you hope to accomplish from your lesson.

The $95 hourly rate will not only buy you the services of Alex, you’ll also be treated to cold water, fresh oranges and clean towels. All of the facilities are spotless and the staff makes you feel like a celebrity even if you are just visiting for the day and not paying for a swank suite at the hotel. Assistant Pro, David Olmeda’s rates start at $30 per half-hour (this may be one of the greatest values in Beverly Hills). On my last session, David successfully ironed out some kinks in my serve. My regular partner was in for a shock at our next match!

The Hotel’s Tennis Shop, offers many tempting and fashionable treats including shoes, racquets, equipment and clothing. Of course, it would be hard to pass up a visit to the Pool Cabana CafÃ?© after your session for a refreshing drink and some well-deserved star- gazing. Grab a bit of shade and a delicious fruit smoothie to energize yourself after your workout.

The hotel is located at 9641 Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills, California 90210. Tel: 310.276.2251, the Tennis Shop can be reached at 310.281.2955 or visit
