Texarkana: Two Cities in One
Living only 15 miles from Texarkana is a true treat for my family. With museums a plenty and landmarks such as the Perot Theater and the Oaklawn Opry House, there is no shortage of things to do. This diversity offers us a chance to see an art exhibition, a Broadway musical or even a country music show (for some Texas culture) if needed, but the vibrant festivals are one of the best treats that it has to offer.
Festivals
If you are lucky enough to visit Texarkana the last weekend in April the Jump, Jive, and Jamfest is a must. The festival is a celebration of the arts in Texarkana. With music, art, dance and wonderful foods, it has quickly become one of my family’s favorite festivals to attend each year. For info on the Jump, Jive, and Jamfest call (903) 792-4992.
In July we always look forward to the 4th of July celebration known as “Sparks in the Park”. This event is a day long celebration of Independence Day on the first Saturday in July and is held at Springlake Park in Texarkana. It is a day full of fireworks and fun for adults and children. You will need to bring lawn chairs for this event because there is no seating provided at the park. For additional info call (903)798-3978.
Museums
Along with the many festivals and events held in Texarkana there are also many activities all year long on a daily basis such as the Regional Arts Center, and Discovery Place Museum.
The Regional Arts Center is located on 4th Street and Texas Blvd and is one of my favorite places to visit. The building is a wonderful example of early 1900’s construction. It was built in 1909 and was originally a United States District Courthouse.
On display every day in the museum are nationally touring art exhibitions. Classes, lectures, and workshops are offered throughout the year to interested individuals. For more info call (903) 792-8681.
The Discovery Place Museum is located at 217 Pine Street and is what I call an interactive museum for kids. The kids are allowed to touch, handle, and play with every display in the museum. My 8 year old daughter is particularly fond of the early 1900’s kitchen play area. Every item in this kitchen is from that era including the stove. The sound wall is another favorite with her. It is 12 feet high and makes different sounds when you push different areas on the wall. The Discovery Place Museum is opened Tuesday through Saturday from 10am until 4pm.
