The Cheapest Ways to Update Your Home

When thinking about updating your home you often have a thousand wonderful ideas in your head. Here are a few tips on how to update your home without breaking the bank.

1. Paint!

If you have wallpaper take it down and paint the walls. Painting is a cheap alternative to costly paneling or reapplying wallpaper which can be a bit of a chore itself. Pick neutral colors, pastels are often a good choice. Painting neutral colors often leaves the door open when selling your home, this way you don’t have to paint your home again when you are ready to put it on the market. If you pick the right color paint, it will never go out of style.

Cabinets are anther thing people often want to update in a home. if your cabinets are in good shape you may want to paint them also. If your home is outdated and you want to get rid of the dark brown colors that were oh so popular in the past, sanding and painting your cabinets is an excellent money saving idea. Also while we’re on the subject of cabinets, new hardware wouldn’t hurt either.

If your home was not equipped with vinyl siding when you bought it and you don’t have the money to install it, a new coat of paint always freshens up the exterior of your home.

2. Landscape

Many people don’t think of landscaping as important when owning a home. If you stop to think about it, it is very important; the front of your home is the first thing guests or prospective buyers see when approaching your home. As we are told time and time again first impressions are important! You may want to plant a few hedges or flowers to add some color to your home, if your feeling extra energetic and you have a larger budget why not install a rock garden or patio.

3. Kitchen and Bathroom

When buying a home people always look at the kitchen and bathrooms with scrutiny. There are a few things you can do to spruce up these areas. New faucets are a great way to make your old sinks look brand new. Something to think about in your bathrooms is your toilets, are they outdated and ugly? A new toilet is always a plus in the bathroom, updating your plumbing sooner rather than later may save you big bucks in the future. If your home was built in 1980 and it has all the original appliances in it, it may be time to update. Its amazing how much more open a kitchen looks with new shiny appliances. If you can not afford new appliances just yet and the ones you have are in good working condition, appliance paint is another choice. Get rid of that pea green oven and make it a clean bright white.

4.Do it Yourself

When updating your home the way to save the most money is doing whatever you can yourself. You may save hundreds or even thousands of dollars if you take on the task of updating your home yourself.
