The Darlin’ Duck Derby: A Fun Way to Support the Clayton County Chapter of CASA

The Darlin’ Duck Derby in Jonesboro, GA is an annual event that benefits the Clayton County Chapter of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). CASA is an organization that strives to prevent children from becoming victims of an overburdened system. Most children who end up in court have suffered a great deal of abuse (both psychologically and physically) and the CASA volunteers work personally with these children, in order to make recommendations to judges regarding the child’s needs. CASA volunteers make a long term commitment to each child, maintaining the relationship of court advocacy until the child finds a safe, loving and permanent home. Unfortunately, the need for organizations like CASA is great and they are always in need of volunteers and funding.

Fortunately, in Clayton County there is an easy and fun way for you to do a little to help support CASA: The Darlin’ Duck Derby in Jonesboro, GA. For years The Darlin’ Duck Derby has been held at the Clayton County International Park (which hosted the Beach Volleyball portions of the 1996 Summer Olympics), this year it will be held on the grounds of the Historic Courthouse in Downtown Historical Jonesboro, Georgia. The concept is simple, you buy a ticket and sponsor a duck in the race, on race day the 4,000 numbered rubber ducks are lined up at the starting point and they race to the other side of the water, with a little help from some of the local fire department’s hoses. If the duck you sponsored places, you can win a prize offered by one of The Darlin’ Duck Derby’s corporate sponsors. This year the sponsor of the winning duck can walk away with 2,000 dollars cash from Heritage Cadillac SAAB. Other great prizes include airfare, limo service, gift certificates to great restaurants like Red Lobster and Up the Creek, and more!

The Darlin’ Duck Derby in Jonesboro, GA is about more than prizes though, it’s a community event. There is a “Duck-o-Ration” Contest where local corporate sponsors of the event each decorate (or dress up) a rubber duck, these ducks then tour around the county to various locations and the people of Clayton County select their favorite duck. In conjunction with the actual race, there is a Leather and Feathers Motorcycle ride to the location of The Darlin’ Duck Derby and the Annual CASA Car Show.
