The Demolition of Our Long Beach Island Home

On October 29, 2013 Hurricane Sandy did massive destruction to all the barrier Islands including the Island I grew up on, called Long Beach Island.

My parents bought this home in 1971 and had rented the home for years before. The owner decided that he wanted to sell it, and beings it sat right on the bay with a dock, and protected waters, my parents decided to purchase it and make it our own. The home was protected because it sat on a cove and not on the main channel which was directly across the street. But even that didn’t stop the tidal waters from Hurricane Sandy that put over 4 feet of water though our home.

My sister and I have many fond memories of when our parents rented the home, and all those years after the home was purchased by my parents.

Even after my sister and I got married and had our own families we continued to share this bay front home and raise our children on the bay as we were raised by our parents.

This past Monday, June 3, 2013 the demolition of our Long Beach Island home began. It was a very sad day, but a happy day for my sister and her husband, because this new empty lot will now have a brand new home up on pilings for the retirement of my sister and her husband.

The memories my sister and I have will never be taken away, but a new life and new memories will begin through the new construction, and living in a brand new home right on the bay. The location and the lot of course will be the same, with just a new and modern home resting in the place where our little bungalow sat.

It was truly amazing how the operator of the excavator took that house down piece by piece and not damaging one thing around our home. I have to hand it to the company that did the demo work, for they really knew what they are doing, and after all said and done, the lot was perfect and neat as you see in the photos attached.

Now my sister is just waiting for the final building permits to begin new construction and a new life for the both of them. I live only a few miles from the home and go over to the Island everyday to see how the progress is coming.

It will be exciting to see the batter boards go up, and the pilings being driven into the ground making the way for the first floor and on to begin.

Beings the home will be up at least 11 feet with a garage underneath with two floors of living space on top of that, my sister and her husband will have spectacular views of the bay, the sunrises and sunsets.
