The Flavor of Love & Celebrity Fit Club – My New Favorite Shows
For the past few years, Reality TV has set a new standard in the entertainment world, and I couldn’t fathom why. I tried to watch Survivor, and unlike the rest of my family, found it anything but interesting. My husband tried to force Fear Factor on me, and I could not stomach watching people eating cow intestines, and the like. I honestly never gave any other reality shows a chance-I just chocked them up as pretty much a dime a dozen with the same premise – stupidity combined with some form of shock value, with characters as valueless as the show itself.
Then one night, as I aimlessly channel-surfed, I came across The Flavor of Love. I have heard of Flavor Flav before, and didn’t feel one way or the other about him. At that time, I knew little about him or his career, all I really knew was that he had broken up with Brigitte Nielson, (who now looks rough as a cob), and was on the prowl for a new lady to love. I honestly don’t know how I got sucked in to this show, it really isn’t so drastically different from the ones that previously bored me. There was just something sincere about this strange little man who seemed to have spent most of his life “looking for love in all the wrong places.” Well, who hasn’t done that before? I found myself rooting for Flav, and hoping he would find the best possible match to make him happy. And I thought he did that when he picked Hoopz. I was glad when she beat out the venomous New York, who I loved to hate, but I realized when he did, there would be no more of this cute little show I had grown so attached to watching every Sunday Night.
Alas, it wasn’t to be, Hoopz and Flav found that their “love” was really only friendship, and now, thank God for the couch potatoes, that there is Flavor of Love 2 this season. My only complaint is, I don’t know who to pick for Flav, because I really don’t see anything special in any of this season’s candidates, one of which wasn’t even potty-trained! However, no matter who Flav picks, you know the season finale is going to be something phenomenal, though I don’t think it will top Season One’s Punkin Spitting in the face of New York or the current season’s Somethin’ crapping on Flav’s stairs!
Celebrity Fit Club drew my attention only because it happened to be on after The Flavor of Love. But, as a fitness and health enthusiast I also wanted to see what types of plans and strategies the panel had up their sleeves for these overweight stars. I missed the first season, but was shocked to discover many celebs I had not seen or heard of in years, like Jani lane, Victoria Jackson, and Gary Busey, whose outrageousness alone made tuning in worthwhile. I hate to admit it, but many times I just had to tune in because I wanted to see who he was going to piss off in each episode. It wasn’t just the wild antics of the celebs that had me hooked. The fight they voluntarily took on is not an easy battle-a literal dichotomy between their will and their weakness, and it is very inspiring to see them so dedicated to making these life-altering changes, as well as helping each other. I also like the panel’s heart-felt advice, and Harvey’s deadpan tough-love method. It is just great TV! Last week’s “meltdown” episode took me a little by surprise, but I guess that’s one of the big reasons these shows are such a success – -you never know what to expect, and you just have to tune in to see!
I will never know what made me reach this epiphany of a Reality TV fan after all this time, but I have forever changed my opinion on the point of this outlandish type of entertainment. Although I may not be a fan of every reality show, I can finally see what their appeal is, and I must say, it is very entertaining.
