The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia
The Franklin Institute is on North 20th Street in Philadelphia’s Museum district.
This science center has a hands-on approach that gets kids and adults of all ages interested in the subjects before them. Whether it is a movie about the body on their giant IMAX theater screen, learning about locomotives, sports, electricity or more, The Franklin Institute is pure fun! IMAX movies are an additional charge.
Fels Planetarium within The Franklin Institute offers three different shows on an ongoing basis. Special presentations are sometimes shown as well. The shows examine how big the universe is, the life and death of stars as well as examining an evening sky. Your admission to The Franklin Institute includes one show at Fels Planetarium.
One very special part of The Franklin Institute is the giant walk through heart. Experience the inside of a heart as you walk through this giant replica of the real thing. The Giant Heart originally opened in 1954 and underwent renovations in 2004. For those who are unable to walk through the heart, there is a new 3D monitor that lets you enjoy the experience in another way.
Kids will love the Sports Challenge room. With life size cut outs of famous sport celebrities, see how you measure up next to a jockey or a basketball player. See how fast you can pitch a ball. Can you keep your balance while trying the surf board? Compare the difference between a standard wheelchair and an aerodynamic racing wheelchair. At The Franklin Institute, you don’t just look at things and keep your hands to yourself; you get to try them out!
There is a 350 ton working steam locomotive. Learn more about the train as you try to get it moving. The Air Show offers aeronautical delight as you learn about flight. Space Command is another area you’ll want to explore. Can you find your house with the satellite tracking device?
At FranklinâÂ?¦He’s Electric! You’ll be amazed at all the hands-on activities. Learn about static, music, optics and more. There is so much to discover at The Franklin Institute you’ll want to be sure to plan an entire day to this wonderful museum and activity center.
There is a caf�© onsite for light meals and snacks, as well as seating for groups that choose to brown bag their lunches. Ramps and elevators are available for those who need them.
