The Gay and Lesbian Scene in San Diego

The city of San Diego, CA is one of the greatest tourist’s spots in the country. There are many different scenes that San Diego has to offer. The gay and lesbian scene is one of them. The Hillcrest district offers many lgbt friendly restaurants, bars, shops, coffee houses, and lgbt resources. If you’re looking for an alternative, comfortable, and open minded community to visit in San Diego then it’s in the heart of Hillcrest. If you’re searching for LGBT resources you can find them in Hillcrest at the LGBT Center.

The center offers information about coming out, HIV and STD’s, workshops, different groups, and events. The LGBT center also offers many different free classes and a computer center. Coinciding with the LGBT center is the LGBT youth center that is located about half a mile into Hillcrest. At the youth center, young adults can also receive additional resources and socialize with youth between the ages of 18-24.

If you are the shopping type of person then you will find many unique shops. Shops in Hillcrest sell items like: Statues, Trinkets, Plants, Flowers, Hats, Gifts, Books, Furniture, Clothes, and many more special items. After shopping if you’re hungry you can also find many great restaurants, bistros, and coffee houses to go to. Restaurants in Hillcrest offer a variety of foods from Asian, Greek, Indian, Afghanistan, Thai, Italian, Sushi, and many more. If you crave coffee you can go to The Living room which is located on University Ave. The living offers great beverages and baked goods along with awesome entertainment.

Every Friday night the Living room has Karaoke, where anyone can come to the microphone and sing. On the other hand if you’re the type of person that is more into the bar and club scene then Hillcrest also offers that as well. Some Lesbian and Gay Bars and nightclubs include the Flame, The Brass Rail, Richards, Flicks, Numbers, and many more. The cover to get into these bars and nightclubs ranges from Free – $7.00 depending on where you go.

On the other hand, if you are looking for bigger events that happen in Hillcrest then here is a few that happen every year. Every summer is the annual Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender pride celebration. This three day event attracts thousands of people from all over California. The Pride Parade marches through hillcrest, and shows off all the different types of personalities that San Diego has to offer. After the parade is usually the Pride Party Celebration that is located a few blocks away from hillcrest in Balboa Park.

Other events include Nightmare on Normal Street that happens every Halloween. There is usually a costume contest where everyone can show off. Events happen almost every month so you can always find something to go to. Hillcrest accommodates not only tourists but all San Diego locals who want to either learn about the LGBT community or want to find a safe place to hang out and be comfortable about who they are.
