The Great Outhouse Blowout of Central Kentucky
Nestled in the hills of Forkland in bluegrass territory is an old time store that to this day still does not have running water or plumbing. Penns store claims to be the oldest country store in America being founded around 1845. It has been family owned down through the generations and is located in the picturesque knobs of central Kentucky. One of the best things about Penn’s is The Great Outhouse Blowout which has been held every year since 1995 on the first Saturday in October. Teams pay an entrance fee and build their own outhouse to race down a 100 yard stretch. Outhouses are built with themes and are either corporate sponsored or privately sponsored. Teams are required to dress alike as well as according to the theme of their outhouse. The structures are placed on wheels and then pulled by teams of up to five people. (One person is required to ride inside the outhouse). Winners advance to the finals and the fastest outhouse is crowned the winner.
This is a must see event that is loads of fun and hysterical to watch and, when the race is over, shop for crafts, enjoy great food and listen to local music and bands play. It is a family oriented event you won’t want to miss but come prepared, there are no indoor bathrooms at Penn’s store!
