In 1824, Dr. John Jeffries founded the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in the blustery month of October. As it began a free clinic, where Boston’s most impoverished souls were welcome to have their eye diseases treated, the institution was one of the first of its kind in the country. By 1827, word spread of Jeffries accomplishments and a Charter was drawn up for the hospital. It then outgrew its birthplace and wandered across the street to where it stands today as one of the most prestigious hospitals in the country. By the beginning of the 20th Century, the Board of Managers had concluded that the infirmary could not care for the large number of cases applying for treatment in its wards unless radical changes were made. Therefore, in 1909, a dwelling to the house was constructed on the old Infirmary building at the corner of Charles and Cambridge streets on the edge of Beacon Hill.
In 1986, the nurses’ building was completely renovated and renamed “The John Jeffries House.” Today, the building is home to one of the finest bed and breakfasts in the city.
