For the serious fisherman, fishing requires more than just a simple fishing rod and some bait. People who fish frequently, or who fish for more than just recreation, may want to invest in a few tools and accessories that will make the experience easier, and help them catch more fish. For anyone just getting started, the following tools may prove invaluable: The Fishing Rod is the fisherman’s most important piece of equipment, and should be chosen with care. For beginners, a basic rod-and-reel set is enough; the features and materials aren’t necessarily important. It is more important that the beginning fisherman learn how to use the rod, and become comfortable with it before moving on to more complex pieces of equipment.
More experienced fisherman can experiment with several styles of rod, to determine what works best for them. Rods come in a range of materials, from wood laminates to fiberglass to carbon fiber. When buying a fishing rod, know before you enter the store what kind of fishing you’ll be doing, and under what conditions. Make sure the rod’s handle fits securely in your palm, and practice casting with the rod, to test how flexible and easy to use it is. Also, buy the proper length. For using lighter bait, or catching smaller fish, a 4 inch to 6 inch rod is adequate. For using larger bait, hooking larger fishes or casting longer distances, a rod of at least 6 inches may be required.
