The Omen: A Great Example Why Remakes Shouldn’t Be Allowed, Though the Marketing Was Good

The Omen was released on 6/6/06 because that is one of the greatest marketing ideas ever made. Let’s make a remake of a great film and release it on the day that actually is 6-6, sorry I am superstitious and don’t like writing it out. So yeah they really hyped this film with the release date of June 6th and I think the movie did ok because of the marketing ploy. Too bad they probably spent more time marketing the movie then actually trying to make it good. I am partially biased because again this is a remake of a great movie, The Omen 1976 which I was surprised to find both films had David Seltzer with writing credits.

Schreiber and Stiles are Robert and Katherine Thorn. They work for the government where Schreiber is an official at the US embassy in Rome. Katherine is pregnant and goes into labor, her husband is rushing to find his wife in the hospital and is confronted by a priest that his wife lost the baby. Oddly enough Robert doesn’t confirm this with a doctor or nurse about the delivery he simply believes the priest and accepts the priests offer to adopt and orphaned boy, and follows the priest’s instructions to never let his wife know what happened. Oh yeah makes lost of sense, next he will carry a bag onto a plane that a stranger gives him in an airport, basically it’s the same thing.

So then it shows a montage scene of Damien with a happy childhood, and the family moves to England where Robert becomes an Ambassador. Now weird things start to happen and the movie still sucks, the only highlights are from actors Pete Postlethwaite and Mia Farrow who deliver life into the nearly dead movie.

The movie lacks something all horror movies need and that is the horror. The only scary scenes are reliant on shock and are dependant on surprise. These were tossed in to keep the audiences attention, and they weren’t very successful.

The only thing this movie has going for it is that it sticks close to the original, which makes me ask why remake a movie if you are going to tell the same story with just a few twists, take some time and come up with a new idea. The original was suck a great movie that I don’t understand why they wanted to remake it other than, the BLING factor, which is remake it and release it on 6/6/06 and make lots of Skrilla, that’s right I used pop-culture rap words in a movie review. I don’t blame them, they don’t make movies just because they want to entertain us, and they leave that to the people starting out making movies for the Sundance and Canes Film Festivals.

A couple of complaints I had about The Omen were that they had way to much dark dismal lightening scenes, it seemed if they ran out of ideas for plot or script they just put in rain and thunder to fill in for the absence of substance. Watching this movie I almost begged for Armageddon to come during the film and save me from the sub par acting I was subjected to. Seriously Ray ‘Rocket’ Valliere from “Stuck on you” is a better actor and if you don’t know who he is, he is literally retarded, he has downs syndrome. How does that feel Julia Stiles? A retarded man can do a better job of acting then a so called accomplished actress.

The kid who plays Damien (Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick) was about as good as the kid from Star Wars Episode I, who played Anakin and he was so bad I won’t even look up his real name for this review. So Seamus you get your real name looked up but know that I still think just because you can hold a scowl for a movie doesn’t mean you are a good actor. I wish that Damien could have been a girl and they could have cast Dakota Fanning that girl is an amazing actress.

So poor acting, poor casting, poor directing, all killed a great movie. Basically this was the original Omen with a few different scenes and worse actors. I give it to them though, the marketing scheme was awesome and it worked a lot of people went and saw the movie. Now I only hope they can forget how horrible it was and wait for Superman Returns, Brian Singer is the director you know it will be good.

So enough about this movie I am sick of writing about how bad it is and it doesn’t really deserve to get any publicity. So only go see this movie if you were sucker enough to believe the hype of “The Sixth day of the Sixth month” blah blah blah. Or if you have seen the original and you want to see for a fact that this movie was only remade to make some Benjamin’s, yeah that’s right I went old school with that.
