The Pros and Cons of Wooden Window Blinds
Naturally beautiful with their exposed grain, wooden window blinds are rarely hidden behind drapes and curtains. Instead, people prefer to stick to window treatments concentrated at the top of the window, which allows the wooden blinds to capture full viewing attention. Curtains are made unnecessary for light control because the blinds’ have a unique ability to block out light better than a vinyl or cloth shade.
When choosing your wooden blinds, keep in mind that you have a choice between real wood, faux wood and woven wooden blinds, each of which comes with its own pros and cons:
WOOD BLINDS are made from real wood, then finished and stained. Real wood blinds can be customized to the customers’ liking. Wood blinds are available in various slat widths and sizes.
Pros: elegant and classic, real wood blinds retain the natural whorls and grain of the wood they were made from, making each one unique.
Cons: can be very expensive depending on the type of wood they were made from. Real wood also risks bending and twisting when exposed to heat and humidity.
WOVEN WOODEN BLINDS are made from a variety of woods; blinds can be ‘woven’ out of hard woods by linking the slats together, or braided out of softer woods in a basket-weaving fashion.
Pros: unique and interesting, woven window blinds retain a special beauty all their own.
Cons: expensive and hard to clean, woven blinds must be kept out of humid areas or they risk rotting.
FAUX WOOD BLINDS are designed in a vinyl polymer or a wood composite to resemble real wood. Not only are they stain resistant and easy to clean, but faux wood blinds also come with various slat sizes.
Pros: faux wood blinds can be used in places that regularly encounter heat and humidity such as the bathroom or kitchen because will not warp.
Cons: with a created grain, faux wood blinds are not as beautiful as their real wood counterparts.
