The Queers to Record Live Album at Bernie’s

The Queers are coming back to Bernie’s on September 16th and 17th to record a live album. Bernie’s was a natural choice for the band. It has been a favorite venue of Joe Queer’s for years. Joe, the only original member and Phillip Hill, the bass player for last few years and formerly of the Teen Idols, Screeching Weasel and a multitude of other bands, are the only confirmed performers for the album.

There are questions as to who the drummer will be. David Trevino, who drummed with the band on it’s 2004 tour and currently in Europe and also drums for Even in Backouts occasionally, is one such contender. Other possibilities include Marky Ramone and Dusty from Supersuckers. Ben “Weasel” Foster is planning on being the opening act for this monumentous occasion, along with the local band the FGDs. Jughead and his band of acoustic punk rockers Even in Balckouts (whom Phillip is also a member of) might drop in and make an appearance as well.

There are a few concerns though. The venue is incredibly small, with the stage standing less then six inches off the floor and they have no official security. Regular bar employees fill in for this job. The ventalation system seems to be attempting to throw a wrench in the works as well by not creating the best acoustics for capturing and recording music. The bar and the band are playing with the idea of making the show invitation only so the crowd will not get as out of control as it has in the past.

This past February, the band played to an oversold crowd who needed six men to keep them from destroying the bands equipment and to even let the band sing for themselves (Queers fans love to help the band out by jumping on stage and singing along with band into their microphones). The crowd wasn’t as violent as it has been known to be in the past at the February show. The main worry is underage kids getting hurt at such a rare event.

If you are going to go to the show, get there early and get your drinking done fast so you don’t risk spilling your booze while the band belts out “This Place Sucks” either time they play it, first or last of the night.
