The Short North Area of Columbus, OH

Are you ready for the nightlife? If so, the Short North area in Columbus, Ohio is the place for you. This up and coming area of shops, galleries, bistros and some of the most acclaimed restaurants is an artsy way to spend an evening out.

On the first Saturday of every month, the short north has their “gallery hop” where shops stay open later and frequently galleries offer hors devours and wine. Street musicians entertain passersby as they not only explore the Columbus art scene, but the are “seen” in this trendy area.

The “short north” area can be found on High Street, or Route 23, in downtown Columbus Ohio. It is located just north of the downtown area, and Columbus convention center, and just south of the Ohio State Campus district. Its distinct lighted arches help delineate the area which is rapidly expanding to meet the campus district just north of it.

Highlights include the new high street extension over the 315 expressway. Be sure to check out the local fare, and plan to wait a little for dinner unless you have made prior reservations.

Local restaurants which are highly acclaimed in the area include RJ Snappers, Rigsby’s, Hyde Park Steakhouse, Lemongrass, and many many more. For those who are not into a fancy sit down dinner, many pubs such as Mac’s provide a place to sit and set your bags as you “people watch.” The best seats are generally those by the large glass windows of every storefront.

Galleries showcasing local as well as national artists are available, and there is a wide range of shops offering everything from housewares to decor, and even outfits for your favorite pet.

One of the main attractions to the gallery hop, besides the art work, is the eclectic mix of people it draws. Frequently you can see expensive artwork, and in the next step, a vendor peddling their wares on the street corner. People of many different ages are attracted to the monthly event as well.

The gallery hop goes until 10 pm the first Saturday every month, and parking can best be found on local streets. Be sure to check the parking signage to avoid getting a ticket – many local neighborhoods are permit parking only.

If you are really brave, or environmentally aware, ride the COTA (central Ohio Transit Authority) bus to get to the short north area. It can be reached by taking the #2 High Street bus line. Busses run until 11 pm and bus fares are around 1.25 per person, a steal considering today’s rising gas prices.
