The Top Family Activities in Troy, Michigan

If you happen to live in Troy, Michigan and have a family (or be visiting) there are lots of great activities always going on year-round for families to take place in. Troy is a very well kept up city and is a great place overall to raise a family. Located in the Metro-Detroit area of Southeastern Michigan, the city works very hard to keep activities going all of the time for families and children of all ages. Events that take place here include everything from a Halloween Scavenger Hunt at the Troy Community Center Pool (for kids 12 and under, adults are free) to checking out “Maple Syrup” time at the Troy Nature Center.

There is always so much going on in Troy if you only take a chance to check things out. The Troy Public Library, Community Center and Family Aquatic Center are all located right near each other for your convenience. Great for the summer, The Family Aquatic Center offers daily and seasonal passes to both guests of Troy and Metro-Detroit for a fun-filled day of water slides and swimming at the wave pool. Yet once summer is over you always have the opportunity to take advantage of the indoor pool at the Community Center.

The Troy Community Center located off of Livernois Rd. and Big Beaver Rd. is a newer building kept up in great shape with lots always going on. You have the option of becoming a member, giving you the benefits of using the workout room and pool for free anytime you like. Or you can pay a small all day fee per person if you are just going for the day. The city of Troy Parks and Recreation Department has a website including many of the special events that take place throughout the year: http://www.ci.troy.mi.us/ParksRec/SpecialEvents.asp. These events take place everywhere from Firefighters Park to Boulan Park or at the Community Center as mentioned above. Many of them on this site are targeted more towards the kids yet most of them also include opportunities for families to be involved as well.

The Troy Nature Center also offers family-oriented events throughout the year. The “Mistletoe and Moonlight” event is said to be a fun family event and less in-depth. On the other hand the Jr. Naturalist Club or Summer Ecology Programs really educate children on the importance of nature and where their roles come in of taking care of it. While these may be more targeted towards just the children, the “Maple Syrup Time” event in March is perfect for a family to check out. The tours take place on the first three Saturdays of March. After a short introduction indoors the tour takes you through the woods just to see how sap is really collected. Afterwards you are given the opportunity to enter the sugar shed and see the wood-stoked sap evaporator in action yourself. Maple Candy, gift shops and of course maple syrup will be available for sale. For anyone who has never checked out the nature center the open house that takes place in May includes children activities and games, wildlife art, along with a chance to pick up information on wildlife and take a walk through the nature trails.

A huge event that takes place every year in Troy is the “Troy Daze Festival.” This event has nearly 100,000 people in attendance every year with lots of different activities and events going on every day. The festival takes place in September, having a little something for everyone with Special Children’s Day at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 14th along with Special Adults’ Evening later that night from 6:00-9:00pm. The follow day offers Senior Sensation with a health fair, pancake breakfast and bingo tournament. Along with these events include days of amusement rides, food booths, petting zoos, photography shows, and even a cutest baby/toddler contest. Talent shows, Scottish Dancers and a Mr. Troy Contest will take place. Check out the following website for a menu of activities: http://www.ci.troy.mi.us/TroyDaze/FestivalSchedule.pdfn.
