The Top Locations for Homeschool Supplies in Chattanooga
We live on a pretty tight budget, like most Americans. I am always looking for the best deal I can get. McKay Used Books and CDs, 6435 Lee Highway, is a thrifty home schoolers dream-come-true. The store has sections devoted to home schooling. Sometimes I may not find exactly what I was looking for, but it is always my first stop. You can find guides on homeschooling, teaching, and raising children in general. They have textbooks, workbooks, and children’s books. The best thing is the cost. Since the books are used, you can find items for a very small fraction of the cost of similar new items. If you are patient and don’t mind a little work, you can even find some books for free in the boxes they keep outside their front doors. Don’t forget that when you are finished with a book you can often take it back and receive cash or store credits. Remember; if you plan on purchasing more supplies from McKay’s selections, you always receive more credit than cash when returning items.
My second stop in Chattanooga is usually The School Box, also known as P & S School Supply, on the corner of East Brainerd Rd. and Hickory Valley Rd. They have the largest selection of materials in the area. They provide materials and services for educators of all types. I have found their prices very competitive, and the convenience of one stop shopping is a big plus for those of us with little spare time. They have books, projects, posters, games, and craft supplies. They have many services available as well. The School Box also offers workshops both in-store and on-line. Since they also provide materials for traditional schools, you can sometimes get helpful information from the professional educators that are shopping beside you. For their selection alone, they would make my list, but they also have some of the most helpful employees around. If they don’t have what you are looking for, you will probably have to order it.
This brings me to number three on my list, Chattanooga Lifeway Christian Store, 2200 Hamilton Place Blvd. Through their partnership with Homeschool Headquarters, they offer an incredible amount of materials. I know some people get a little spooked when they hear the word “Christian”, but this store has a lot to offer to homeschoolers of all religious backgrounds. If you want friendly, helpful service their staff is the best I’ve seen. It is the one store I can go to and not get stressed-out by fellow customers or rude employees. They offer everything you need to homeschool children of all ages. You can even buy school desks and furniture through them. They truly are the answer to a desperate homeschooler’s prayers.
These are by no means the only places to check in Chattanooga, but they are my favorites. I also recommend stopping by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. You need to be prepared to do some walking when you do. Parking is limited and sometimes you might have to pay to park, but they have a large Teaching Department and good selection of books in their bookstore. There are also public libraries scattered all over the Chattanooga area.
If you are looking for savings think McKay Used Books and CDs, for on-hand selection try The School Box, and for service you can’t beat go to Chattanooga Lifeway Christian Store.
