The Top Military-Related Must Sees in Bremerton, Washington
Even though not directly related to the military, the Washington State Ferries offer a ferry to Bremerton from the Seattle side. It is highly recommended that you experience this ride while visiting Bremerton. In fact, the ferry system is Washington State’s number one tourist attraction. The ride itself is an hour. The scenery is simply superb. You can either park your vehicle on the Seattle side and be what is known as a foot passenger. Or, you can drive your vehicle on-board. Either way, this will give you a much greater appreciation of the natural beauty found in the Northwest. Once aboard the ferry, there will be a cafÃ?© to enjoy a beverage or quick bite. The food is rather expensive, though. That is to be expected on any transportation system, however.
· Some tourists like to walk around the ferry once it begins its trip. I have known people who get their exercise by walking a large rectangular course around the ferry interior.

The first thing you will notice upon arriving in Bremerton (via ferry), is the eye-appealing waterfront area. The Bremerton Boardwalk here has statues of military-themed figures. There also are placards with military-oriented information on them. It’s really interesting and pleasant to see. The walkway itself is attractive and well landscaped. There are plenty of seating benches to sit and simply watch the waterfront activity. Also, there are stores nearby so you can whet your whistle or enjoy a snack. There is no charge to browse and view the waterfront area.
Down a bit from the above walkway is a retired military ship known as the USS Turner Joy. It is a refurbished Vietnam-era destroyer that is now a floating museum. For less than $10 you can take a tour of the vessel. I liked walking below deck, but you can also explore topside. The view is great of the Sinclair Inlet from up there. On a clear day, you can see Seattle.Touring this destroyer is a wonderful way to get a feel for how the veterans experienced life. You can purchase a guided tour, or take a solo tour. I preferred the solo tour since I could take my time. There is a lot to see and appreciate aboard this ship. There is a gift shop on board, too. Oh, there is room for group events also. Drive a few miles away from the Bremerton waterfront and you will come to the small town of Keyport. Keyport is known as the “Torpedo Town, U.S.A.” This is because it is home to the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. Located in this town is an informative and compelling museum titled ‘Naval Undersea Museum’. Go inside here and you are transported back to the beginning of undersea exploration. It is simply fascinating.
· There is a periscope area so you can get a feel of how they work.
· There are a multitude of scuba diving outfits complete with apparatuses.
· I never knew so many varieties of torpedos existed, but I saw them here. In fact, I saw the evolution of the torpedo. Who would have thought?
